I'm not able to do anything as soon as i get above the 75k mark the traffic just cripples my cities >.<
I've just managed this in the MMO game on EU6. I had 3.5 oil well and 3 trade depots, all fully upgraded (apart from the 0.5 well, no room) AND stopped exporting oil for a few days until all storage were full. ONLY then was I able to hit the 160,000 daily profit to get to the upgrade. I'm currently saving up for the refinery expansion.
Now my question; which one should I spec in? Do plastics or fuel sell for more? (prices pls if anyone knows them)
i think its the whole region, both ours and aikyos cities have crazy traffic!
im actually about to demolish my city and try and remake it :S
probably end up just as shit! going to exploit my coal and oil reservers!

plasticsa are like 12k i think, not sure about fuel. but you could use oil for fuel, and get a recycling plant for plastic/alloys and sell both! alloys sell for a lot so would reccomend recyling plant

I left my city in Asia at 130k, with about 1+ million visitors. I did have a huge traffic problem, but I remade some roads into 6 files & re-directed traffic a bit. It's the city of the coast called "Hungvic Bay" if you're curious.

It's actually not that hard to avoid heavy traffic problems:
Don't make buildings at an avenue.
Build only on one side of a road.
No four way intersections.
Minimal trafic lights (that's a bit tricky, as you need to get around it)
No streetcar (it adds a traffic light at ever intersection)
I actually seen 400k cities in grid build without traffic completly getting stuck, without public transportation
How do you avoid having traffic lights? Doesn't the game automatically add them at intersections?

Medium roads don't have traffic lights, you can make a small section of medium street before an intersection.
You can watch this vod, he starts about 3 hours in with his high population city, he uses pretty much all tricks, and goes to i think 425k population without public transportation. You can go to about 7 to 8 hours in, as he streamed the complete build (pretty cool to watch) He explains the traffic tricks a few times, but can't find it at the moment, well 7 hours buildtime <.<

Okay guys I had a very successful test last night for traffic. I got to 150k with no traffic issues. Here are things I have learned:
1. Only build buildings and zones on one side of the road. Having stops on both sides of the road creates congestion on that road.
2. Put bus stops on both sides of the road. Sims hate crossing the street!
3. Street cars done wrong will hurt your city. They are bugged and get confused at intersections. The rule to follow for street cars is to avoid intersections period!
4. Sims prioritize trains. Most Sims will prefer to use a train over other transportation. Set up train stations and put bus stops and depots next to them.
5. Prioritize mass transit methods depending on your Sims wealth. Low to medium wealth Sims love buses but high wealth Sims hate them and will avoid them. High wealth Sims and tourists prefer Street cars. Everyone loves trains. Plan accordingly!
6. Airports are useless if you are not a tourist city or don't have the international airport Great Works.
7. Sims don't mind using multiple methods of transportation. Put bus stops and street car stops next to other mass transit buildings.
Edit: Added the following from DieFichte and more
8. You can avoid having traffic lights by creating a small strip of medium density road before an intersection.
9. Avoid using 4 way intersections. They create heavy congestion and Sims AI doesn't use them properly.
10. On maps that are uneven, it's possible to use some clever terraforming to create an overpass. Overpasses can help a ton with your traffic, they prevent intersections.
More to come! I'm doing lots of reading and experimenting.

upto 50k residents on my new town, have 1/2 casinos making a profit with a load of shops/residential around them, to try and pop some hotels.. seems to be working, although the 3rd casino i have up isnt doing so good
My worst traffic is green, so i figure thats pretty good atm, mind you, i do pretty much have highways, im trying to get as much simoleons as i can so i can revitalize some areas, and make my gambling/tourism site alot better.
There is a bug with casinos, as they follow the same AI rule as shops: Sims will go down the road from where they arrive and go into the first "commercial" building. So if you have say a casino direct next to the trainstation, and one at the other side of town, there is a high chance, the one on the other side will not get enough people.
