Well, I don't have anything I can make with ascended materials at 400 skill, in fact, all of the materials I have except for Dark Matter say "450".

Hmm, trying to remember how I did it - I think I discovered some rares at first which were pretty close to break-even. I may have got some karma recipes from the crafting vendor as well.
If I'd known so much misinformation was going to be flying around about it I would have written up a guide.

It's the last 25 levels iirc that you need to make the exotic weapons. You'll lose half the cost of those if you sell them on the TP.
Also, do it on Friday before reset so you get the highest WvW bonus, use a crafting booster and have any guild boosts turned on. Makes a huge difference.

I actually leveled to 450 originally just to use up the stupid mats...
It depends on what you've got available, you can refine oric and such mats until 425, you also still skill up for the components to make exotics until 425. You can save money by buying completed components sometimes, but of course then you're missing out on those skillups to 425, so you can balance the costs however you'd like.
From 425 (or whatever) to 450, you discover exotics (and similar, like artifcer potions or whatnot), at 450 you grind out all your dust and stuff until 475. You can make the ecto materials once per day, so you don't HAVE to burn your skill to 500 while still making the ecto-refinements, IMO.
Then, you discover more exotics until 500.
If you don't already have the (er, dark matter? void something? the ascended mat from exotics), then you can burn some of your under-valued exotics to get them and sell the others to recoup some money.

I've got plenty of mats stockpiled, and I've actually been waiting for the ascended armor in order to kit out a couple alts in exotics just for skillups.
It may already be too late at this point, but stockpiling before the prices go up will probably save you a lot of money too. Buying the day of ascended armor will probably be a hassle.

The head is too different.
Someone linked item codes for stuff, each item was [Begin the Journey: Chaos Gun] (except all the different precursors). The mouseover info didn't save in teh screenshot I took. It was something like "all the materials to begin your quest to make Chaos Gun" or something. This was a month ago, but I never saw anything about it and who knows if it's actually being implemented in that way. I didn't really look into it after that. They are working on some crafting/quest/story thing to make precursors. But they haven't said exactly what the method will be and they haven't said when they are going to do it.
Here's the codes that were datamined:

Fine, I won't mention it (eventhough it drives me absolutely insane)
It's been a while since I lvld to 500 but don't bricks stop at 450 and then you have to go 1/day to get up to 475 and after that you need exotics to 500?
The expensive part isn't 400-450, it's the last push 475-500.
I also don't believe you spent 60g when factoring in ectos, ectos alone are 51g
Making the cheapest weapon ONCE would have cost you another 4g.
The absolute cheapest method would be refine ori/wood till 425? then do bricks to 450? and dragonite/darksteel till 475? and then exotics to 500.
In most cases, I understand the other side's viewpoint and how they came to it, but cannot tolerate their stubbornness to not see mine (the right one).
It's annoying that my professions are maxed and I can't figure out what the path is then, so I'll need some help
400-425 => make ancient wood planks/orichalcum ore
425-450 => No frigin clue
450-475 => Bloodstone Brick, Dragonite Ingot, Empyrial Star, Glob of Elder Spirit Residue, Lump of Mithrillium
475-500 => Exotics
What can you do from 425 to 450?
In most cases, I understand the other side's viewpoint and how they came to it, but cannot tolerate their stubbornness to not see mine (the right one).
425-450 is basically the same as 475-500, discover exotics and other recipes. Artificer has a lot of potions, but I think they're just as much crafting xp at 425 as 475, so when you do it doesn't really matter much.
Also crafting the components during 400-425 is a skill up, depending on the price difference between the base mats and crafted item, like the price difference between ore and refined bars. If you actually plan it out, you can make the components you'll need early on, but again it depends on how much of a rush you're in. (I mean, some will want to level 450-475 asap, others can just slowly crank out ecto refinements and other mats as they get to it. If you want to blast through it, you'll need to discover more exotics.)
As an altaholic, it is/was a very low priority for me to crank out gear. Not like I"m going to craft 30+ weapons and 60 pieces of armor. I was 460ish during that argument thread, and just finished up a month ago maybe.
That's what the guide does.
I calculated the cost of going 450-475 with the guide it's (about) 52g36s77c, I'll round it up to 61g for orichalcum/wood (you discover 9weapons)
You now have to add the cost of the mats to upgrade ascended mats, good thing I'm fucking bored out of my mind atm.
Some numbers (not taking into account the cost of Karma)
Bloodstone Brick: 14s96c
Dragonite Ingot: 14s96c
Empyrial Star: 14s96c
Glob of Elder Spirit Residue: 1g12s
Lump of Mithrillium: 84s
Spiritwood Plank : 4g42s70c (but since you need to craft Spirit Residue you can subtract 1g12s and get 3g30s70c)
Deldrimor Steel : 3g17s70c (but since you need to craft Mithrilium you can subtract 84s and get 2g33s70c)
If you only craft the mats needed for an ascended weapon (assuming that gets you from 450-475) it'll cost you 45g68s72c.
But we're not there yet!
We need to add
5 * (Ingot + Star + Brick) = 2g24s4c
5 * 40s6c (Vial of Powerful Blood, since anything else is inferior and not worth crafting in ascended form but I digress) = 2g3c
The cost of the recipe = 3g
84k karma, 5 laurels, 20 skill points
Total = 52g93s42c, 84k karma, 5 laurels, 20 skill points (I CBA to find the worth of karma, laurels and skill points)
The difference between the two methods is a whopping 8g6s58c (excluding the karma, laurels and skill points)
There is a minor error in accuracy since you have to subtract the orichalcum ingots/ancient wood planks you craft from the 400-425 part but I just don't care anymore, although I now realise that typing this takes longer than doing the math *whistles*.
I went with weapon smithing BTW.
TLDR: If 84k karma, 5 laurels, 20 skill points < 8g6s58c (and this gets you from 450-475) then yes gw2crafts is more expensive.

I just discovered ascended weapons come in different colors (as you can tell I'm really on top of this ascended crafting nonsense :P). I was not sold at all on the red (which is unfortunately berserker), but I really like the blue and white ones.
I think I read once you're at 500 skill that the materials for the weapon itself are only about ~10g? I'd be sorely tempted to make a second one and transmute the color if that's all it costs. I also read that they're account bound (supposedly the armors will be as well), which is fantastic.
It's something in the ballpark of 50g (I calculated the costs yesterday right above your post )
You need to add the recipe for the weapon to it though which is 5g? so total is more like 58g

Bleh. Though I suppose that's not any more than a BLC skin off the TP, I can't justify almost 60g just for a color change.

If it's really something that can be done with 'only' 60 gold, I'll absolutely try it. I guess I should save up ahead as much as I can so I can decide if I want ascended or not - mainly for the precursor. It's pretty much all I need and I'm debating if I should buy it, or craft if once it's available xD
It looks like everything from last year is there with some little things added, I'm talking about the donation drive with the dolyak escort afterwards. This is how Halloween should of been handled instead of removing things such as the dota style game and the Mad King dungeon.
