Well... Okay, this is hard for me since it's one of my favorite games... But you could read the Wiki. It tells the lore quite well, though if you want to play Fallout 2 (Same playstyle as Fallout 1, it's just twice as big and all those annoying bugs are fixed) then you might want to avoid spoilers about NCR and stuff, which can be a bit hard there.
One of the big things in Fallout is the moment you realize what it is you're actually doing. Following your character through the story, and bearing the guilt of your actions on your shoulders.
The most important thing in Fallout 1 is the last dialog with Master, but it's hard to understand if you haven't played through the areas and explored the world. How far did you get in it?

Auch. I've never played a melee character...
Though I have a trick if you want an easy start: Small guns, then attack the raider camp and stand by the edge of the map. Kill one, then run out and heal up, then go back and kill one. Not only does it give tons of XP, but you'll start off with their leather armor and combat shotguns/hunting rifles. That should carry you up until' you start meeting muties.
