Yes this is very true. I have tested this quite a bit in fitting diffrent pieces together. The alchemy trink is a good example of an item with a strange budget, also very good for CMs.

The 476 Engineering helm is also a very nice item if you are an engineer. The secondary stats from cogwheels doesn't scale down so you keep the raw stats.

Note that all this doesn't trivilize the challenges, but they do help a bit.

Engineering helmets with two cogwheel sockets + meta socket rock (Retinal Armor)! You won't get a regular socket, but the two full cogwheels totally worth it.

Also, ToT trash necks with sockets, 3 sockets' pants, socketed bracers (if available), two socketed rings, CD reduction trinket from SoO (not so sure on how the "Amplifies stats" trinkets work on CM), and of course, sha-touched weapon with legendary gem + prismatic socket from Wrathion.

Legendary weapon gem is disabled. You'd be better off with a garrosh heirloom imo. They have 2 sockets.

we did golds in 2.5 nights with crappy classes like prot warriors and moonkins we didn't watch any videos or put together any fancy gear. it wasn't that hard.

i will say, with ilvls ranging from 522-535 it was somewhat easier and dps was overall higher than when i did them at the start of the expansion at ~480 ilvl.

i guess what im trying to say is if you're just going for golds, bring some skill. if you want realm firsts bring mages, shamans, and monks. the actual gear makes only a small difference.

The CDR and AMP trinkets from SoO are scaled down to the point where they are absolutely crap.
You're better off using the Relic (Darkmoon Trinket) and any trinket from T14 or T15.
Hit and Expertise are NOT scaled down. So if you have an item with for example 570+ HC hit rating item, (Galakras Hit / Mastery shoulders for example) as plate dps, this doesn't scale down and it can make you capped with 2-3 items. Wich in turn, saves stats on your other gear.

And any TOT weapon with an extra socket. Since they have 1 socket + the prismatic added. The itemization and stat budget is only calculated for 1 socket, where as the heirloom is calculated on 2 sockets.
But if you do not have an TOT weapon with the extra socket, the heirloom is a nice alternative.
Allso it's better to use an item with for example slightly worst stats ( crit / haste over haste / mastery) ~as a retribution paladin for example, that can give you a better socket bonus and the correct color socket.
    2x yellow socket > 2x blue socket.

If you are just going for gold (like I did) you don't need to do any major switches. Use the Darkmoon Faire trinket if you have it laying around, it's really good. If you still have a ToT or T14 (Not sure if that's the right tier, with MSV/HoF/ToES) weapon, you can put an extra socket on there. What has a way higher impact on your times is playing properly and have a good setup. Disc priests really help. Tank wise Monk/DK is the way to go. For DPS the best specs are Frost mages, Ele Shams, Surv hunters and destro locks. If you have a full group of all of these specs you'll blaze through everything. 3/5 from this list should make getting gold pretty easy though.

    Edit:

This is actually not true. Having hit/exp items, although they are not nerfed in cmodes, make OTHER items get nerfed heavely. For instance, if you have 200 haste on a head slot item and a 100haste in a haste trinket they both get nerfed as usual, (not actual numbers but for sake of argument lets say the head gets nerfed to 180 haste and trinket to 90 haste) if in turn you equip a 100 hit trinket instead of the 100 haste one, the trinket wont get nerfed but the head will get nerfed (e.g. to 170 haste rather than 200 or 180) as a result there is absolutely not advantage from receiving hit/exp cap from a lot of hit/exp in 2 itmes or capping with very tiny amounts of hit/exp in 8 items. end result is the same. In general DMG/Alchemy trinkets are very powerful for most classes. Must blue trinkets from heroic dungeons are very powerful as well. SoO trinkets are not as great though they might have their use in certain places (multistrike/cleave portions are crap, dont assume that because there is lots of aoe in cmodes they good, the nerf makes them really bad, if you want them its mostly cuz of proc reasons). with ToT/ToES/MSV trinkets falling somewhere in between. Trinkets are a fun thing to analyze, cuz which ones are good will depend on your groups' dps as well, for certain dps profiles you will have certain trinkets procing often at the end of the pull (e.g. they are wasted) and going for a "less desirable" trinket that procs less often but with more stats might actually be better (though difference is only relevant for people minmaxing and the end result can only be obtained by trial and error, a very painful trial/error!)
