So apparently Bernie's campaign staff didn't like this t-shirt, they sent the artist a cease and desist. Such things are pretty common but you don't expect this kind of behavior from the left so much.

That logo would be true if Bernie were a communist. It's in rather poor taste to be honest.
Everyone wants Freedom of speech until their feelings get hurt.
Well, maybe you don't. I operate on the assumption that lawyers gonna lawyer.

It's also an example of the worst argument in the world. Even if it were superficially plausible to associate some Sanders with Mao based on some redistributive impulse, it's non-central - perhaps the shirt-makers haven't noticed, but Bernie Sanders isn't much of a brutal dictator.

Yeah, who wouldn't be cool with being associated, fallaciously, with Mao, Stalin and Lenin?
The cease and desist letter.
Their lawyer's response
A blog post by the lawyer.
Just lawyers being lawyers. But it's the kind of thing that I would not expect from Sanders' campaign.
Bernie's lawyer had no issue with the shirt other than using the official Bernie logo due to campaign rules and regulations. Quick font change and business is back.
Folks, this has nothing to do with "defamation". The guy who made the shirt based the format off the Sanders campaign's official logo, which they hold a copyright for. It's a copyright infringement case. If he changes the font on "Bernie" and gets rid of the underline that's part of the logo, then there'd be no complaint.
I would actually buy one of those t-shirts and wear it to a Bernie rally. I haven't heard about any rallies in the California bay area yet though.
If its a copyright issue thats one thing
but if its a speech issue, Bernie is fair game.
Normally yes, but campaigns for government positions have special laws. Profiting off this shirt could be confused with Sanders making money off his campaign because of the use of the official logo. Because of that, the shirt is in violation of campaign rules and regulations. If anything, the Sanders campaign is doing these people a favor.
Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Bernie? Does that even make sense. I guess it might appeal to Bernies commie university crowd?
If it's just a matter of font usage just change it for some "fake" cyrillic/Russian font with backwards R or some other characters.
If it walks like a duck sounds like a duck looks like a duck you are pretty safe to call it a duck
Sanders belonged to communist front organizations in college. he went and lived in a communist community in Israel when he left college. he hung the Russian communist flag up in his office when he was a mayor. he went to and gave support to American hating communist revolutionaries in central America. he wrote about and called for the nationalization of the banks, the energy industries, and utility companies. he called for the confiscation of corporations and rich families wealth
all he did was take his communist ideology called it democratic socialism to make it more palatable
