Food Is Now Free In Italy If You Are Hungry, Preposterous!!!

Apparently its now legal to steal in In Italy if you are hungry according to their courts. Instead of throwing criminals in jail, they are just going to encourage more people to steal. Hell, why should I pay for food if everyone else doesnt. Just say you are hungry and take all you want for free. Nevermind that you are screwing the markets who wont be compensated for their losses. I hope they all close down in protest!!

Stealing small amounts of food to stave off hunger is not a crime, Italy's highest court of appeal has ruled.
Judges overturned a theft conviction against Roman Ostriakov after he stole cheese and sausages worth €4.07 (£3; $4.50) from a supermarket.
Mr Ostriakov, a homeless man of Ukrainian background, had taken the food "in the face of the immediate and essential need for nourishment", the court of cassation decided.
Therefore it was not a crime, it said.
A fellow customer informed the store's security in 2011, when Mr Ostriakov attempted to leave a Genoa supermarket with two pieces of cheese and a packet of sausages in his pocket but paid only for breadsticks.
In 2015, Mr Ostriakov was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months in jail and a €100 fine.

They should give that food to Italians, not Hungarians!

Everyone should have their basic human needs (of which food is one) met, though this doesn't seem the right way to go about it.

I can see why you are confused, yes european courts are actually more humane as our prisons aren't private property and companies don't stand to profit from incarcerating everyone, the irony of american courts putting a price on freedom that way indirectly.

Do create more threads world estranged Orlong, i do enjoy a good stereotype now and than!

You're right. You won't get an extra sentence over here if you break out of prison. Simply because it's human nature to pursue freedom.

Rofl, what. Locking people up for stealing like 4€ costs more than it's worth. It fucking costs more from when it was reported up until the verdict in court... Locking them up would cost shitloads more than that.

Ah yeah, because sentencing people to 20 years of bagne, Misérables style is so much better.

BTW, the point of the Misérables was to point out (amongst other things) how criminally stupid was those kinds of laws, mid nineteenth century

We had a small market in the town a grew up. One time a man walked in, grabbed a sandwich and bolted out the door. The owner was behind the counter and someone asked him, "aren't you going to do something? Call the cops or chase after him?" the owner replied " the man stole a sandwich, he didn't steal liquor or candy or soda. He is obviously hungry and needed the sandwich more than I needed the $3 I would have sold it for. I'm not calling the cops on someone that is so hungry they had to steal food from me" I was like 13 when this happened and it has stuck with me to this day.

I can see where this can get out of hand if you have a mass amount of people doing it. But one man stealing one sandwhich shouldn't be an issue.

That means the tax payer has to pay for them, aren't you against that in principle?

Isn't it common for many countries to have this kind of thing? Why is this news?

Many countries even have it explicited in their constitution.
