It's ridiculous to me someone who buys collectors edition Legion, blizzcon ticket, pays for WoW sub 3+ years straight can be ignored over someone who's had 2 months sub, but rolled 100. I agree with your anger but disagree with your comment. Having newer players take part in the beta is important feedback. It's not just about finding bugs. How will they know whether newer players to the game will enjoy the expansion if only veteran players get invited to beta?

PTR is only pre-patch event, not Legion beta materials.

PTR is broken shores, all class changes, demon hunter zone and the pre-patch world invasions.
You get everything except Legion quest zones en dungeons/raids.

Dunno if you get artifacts yet, they will probably be gated till Legion release on 30 August and then a quest at midnight sends you to dalaran

A beta test is better tested by those who going to and want to play it, on a regular basis. The unsubbed, afk's for WoD and people who don't even play WoW don't seem to be doing a lot of playing, yeah that's our target audience they'll test the shit out of this. I had WoD beta two months before it released, sadly haven't been flagged for Legion testing.

Artifacts and Class Halls are tied to 100+ content, so you won't have access to those until launch.

Beta starts officially tomorrow (thursday). They stated that in the live stream. The invites going out right now still say Alpha so people are just being trolls.

It being named "alpha" is completely irrelevant.
I had no such access prior to this wave.
So it's name means nothing.
Blizzard may or may not change that in the future.

But don't get hung up on the word.
You have it, are going to get it as the wave continues (if it still is), or you will not.
Be it called alpha or beta it is the same thing.

If you want to get hung up on the wording, the client has the word "Beta" in the bottom corner in the version information on the login screen.
