That is just some weird connonation americans have put on the word. In most West-European countries I know the Liberal party is usually considered a right-wing party that is very pro-employer and business rights. Extremely supportive of free market principles. They are with that the complete opposite of the socialist parties which are more pro-government regulations and pro-employee rights. (well in theory at least... in reality they're all the same bunch of manipulators that just like to line their own pockets).

"Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally they support ideas and programs such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free markets, civil rights, democratic societies, secular governments, and international cooperation."
There is social liberalism and classical liberalism, Americans typically mean social liberalism when they say liberal, which is different from the classical liberalism you describe.

To confuse some Americans you can call yourself a liberal conservative.

Well I went and looked it up in the dictionary and . . . the definition supports both. one definition is the freedom one and the other is generosity, so yeah. Both right. And I'm British, not American, and our Liberal party is Centre-Left ish.

He's afraid of the Faroe Islands since Russia thinks they'll hunt their nuclear submarines when whales run out.

Classic liberalism typically hovers around center, it can have a dash of left, right or both.

Then finally we can get doing actual real work in the world instead of hiding behind nicely convoluted curtains all the time.

    Stranger: Indeed?
Cassilda: Indeed, it's time. We have all laid aside disguise but you.
    Stranger: I wear no mask.
Camilla: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) No mask? No mask!

And yes I do think the huge amount of crap coming from such a large amount of american politicians, reflect back on the americans, they voted for them after all.
Lol no, you can't judge a country based on what is said by some individuals or by some small minority without real political power. I'm sure you can find politicians with such fringe opinions in almost any country. The fact that you decided to single out such an instance from Russia, in order to take a swing against Russia, doesn't really tell us anything about Russia but rather is only an indication of your personal misguided prejudices.

But as I said, it's enjoyable to sit back and read all these comments shooting your opening post down.
