That is just some weird connonation americans have put on the word. In most West-European countries I know the Liberal party is usually considered a right-wing party that is very pro-employer and business rights. Extremely supportive of free market principles. They are with that the complete opposite of the socialist parties which are more pro-government regulations and pro-employee rights. (well in theory at least... in reality they're all the same bunch of manipulators that just like to line their own pockets).

Lol no, you can't judge a country based on what is said by some individuals or by some small minority without real political power. I'm sure you can find politicians with such fringe opinions in almost any country.
