How do you practice your sniping?

Since I'm considering practicing to get better at sniping, I'm wondering how others did/do it.

I thought I'd try vs. AI, but their patterns quickly become predictable and half the time I've got a Bastion try-hard in the team mowing the AI down as they just run to the objective in a straight-line train.

So I moved on to Quick Play, but when the other team starts to win I feel compelled to switch to a hero with whom I can actually contribute. Practice mode..isn't much practice because the training robots in there don't fire back and move in a simple repeated pattern.

Share your tips, oh glorious snipers.

2 sens, 2000dpi, pick Widow, aim at heads.

I don't sniper well at all, but I hear you should try leaving your mouse still while aiming and just strafe right and left, plus a mix of waiting for the enemy to come to your cross hair, not trying to bring your cross hairs to the enemy.

I usually do a quick spiral motion to hone in on the target. Seems to work fine for me.

Learn to predict peoples movement. If someone moves left...then he moves? Yea aim where hes gonna be. As a widowmaker u don't have to deal with bulletdrop, so don't need to aim above anyones head, which makes it easier. But as hanzo on the other hand u have to aim above people and ahead of them if u wanna hit them, otherwise ur gonna miss :P.

And slow ur mouse down if it's fast as fuck, need a slow mouse for snipe-aiming. Cause ur hand, eyes and ur brain needs to function as one, cause if ur that millisecond off, it's a miss.

    • Make sure sensitivity is low enough to track heads and not constantly overflick.
    • Practice flicking on bots and AI.
    • Practice from all angles and distances.
    • Get comfortable with your sensitivity and arm/wrist/hand position and movement.
    • Zoom out for a split second after shooting to reposition your aim quickly or over greater distances.
    • Don't always go for heads (Tracer and Zen can be 1 shot with a body shot)
    • Very important: constantly be right clicking to keep your scope out but not zoomed, that way you can instantly scope when needed and avoid the long animation.
    • Jump and strafe to the side, then scope in mid-air (instead of only strafing while scoped which is slow), that way you keep your fast momentum while charging a shot or when peeking so you're not so easy to hit and have a highly charged shot ready when you land.

Also, 144hz monitors are OP if you can run it close to 144 fps. Just got one and holy fuck is everything 10x smoother and mouse input so much snappier. It's not even right how much easier you can track enemies.

Other than that stuff just practice, practice, practice. I've been called an aimbot and then I'll get shit talked for being horrible and won't even get a medal. It happens. Genji and Winston will ruin your fun. Learn the maps and sniping positions and constantly move around.

Can you pick which AI characters they use? Hard AI with nothing but Widowmakers. That'd be a challenge.

I recommend medium if practicing aim. Hard is like super gameshark aimbot mode. Can't aim when you're dead all the time, lol.

Ummmm, think it's just random AI (haven't look for specific characters to fill with)
Tucci below you is right though, probably should drop to medium if you're just looking to aim practice.
    Hard AI is incredibly hard.

There are bots in the practice range that move around a fair bit, give those a shot from various positions to warm up. Might have to try the AI thing.

You'll be one regardless without practice against ACTUAL human enemies.

Trust me, robots and or static targets do not qualify versus a real match. At least, that's always been my approach. I go straight into the action and learn/develop as I go.

...and I'm sorry but you're no more of a liability than the Reaper that follows Reinhardt on the escort, with no enemies around, and all of them overhead firing down at us. That is quite literally a useless player that has no idea of even basic strategy concerning his hero selection. At least as WM you give vision and create tension.

Clearly you've not played hard AI bots
Players are mouth-breathing dipshits in comparison

It's fair enough, that's generally been my attitude to this point, but I want to improve and a lot of the games yesterday just didn't have room for a WM to work out. Either because it would have meant going with no tank, or because everyone has figured out how to deal with her, myself included; which makes for pretty torid gameplay and not much by way of practice.

I've played a lot of CS over my years roughly 4 - 5k hours and I used to practice muscle memory maps a lot to react quickly. I suggest you find something to emulate a muscle memory situation for you to get used to your sensitivity.

You need to find a sensitivity that suits YOU. No one can tell you to play a certain sensitivity, I mean you can play a sensitivity that someone suggests but everyone is different and there will be a sensitivity out there that will truly fit you.

Playstyle: Especially against Pharahs and other Widowmakers. If you have been spotted, don't repeek unless you are confident you can land a shot that will kill them within a split second. They have their crosshair on that angle and will 9/10 kill you, unless they are truly horrible. Otherwise, just run off and find another angle and you'll find that widow may have moved but a lot of the time they keep the same angle and if you are quick enough will still be scoping your old line.

Shoulder-peaking is great against widowmakers as they charge their bullets, making them waste a charge gives you time to peek out and land that shot.

Other than that, find a good mouse (I use and suggest a razer deathadder), have a nice mousepad that suits you and practice your flicking + muscle memory and play around with your sensitivities until you find the right one for you and you'll be on track to outfragging other widows, hanzos and picking off vital supports like mercy

But watch out for those genjis and winstons

I'm not the best widowmaker in the world but I am currently top 250 in the world for Widowmaker KDA.

Practice thats all really, just game after game,

Im on a pc but I use my controller for it, but I find high sensitivity helps a lot
