Why are the off-topic sub-forums so popular?

MMO-C gen-ot is surprisingly diverse, in the sense that there are lots of people with different on opinions on most things here, unlike on most forums - which are usually dominated by an overwhelming majority who agree on almost everything, with maybe a tiny number of "that guy"s who appear in every thread to disagree with the majority and are mostly treated as a joke.

Though that's not to say that posters here don't treat each other as jokes... it just isn't as one-sided, which makes it more amusing to read.

I'm guessing it's probably mostly down to the moderators, since they wield the power necessary to force the userbase to comply. Although in spite of that, the diversity of the moderator staff doesn't seem as diverse as that of the userbase. You'd expect truly fair moderators to be accused both of being brown-people-hating xenophobic misogynists and of being immigrant-loving freedom-hating feminazis at the same time, but mostly they just seem to be accused of being the latter, which suggests an unhealthy bias in that direction. But most places are worse, so...

you're comparing a subforum that covers anything non-video game related to a sub-forum that deals with 1 specific game..

that's why it's more popular, because there's more content that is allowed to be posted and replied to on here. lol

Because the moderators aren't left wing extremists looking for any reason to ban a conservative, unlike the teamliquid off topic forums. On there left wing posters can say whatever they want, while a conservative can be banned just for saying something the mods disagree with.

Still better than Bioware forums: those guys decided to be off with moderation and just completely removed the Off-Topic section. The day it happened was the day I stopped coming back there.

I'm not sure, I don't know much about WoW forums... But in case of Bioware forums, the worst was the official explanation: while it was clear that moderation in the Off-Topic section was lacking, officially they said that they just wanted to improve the forums by making them less divided and uniting multiple sections together - however, Off-Topic section wasn't united with anything and just locked and archived. It angered quite a few folks, and many left the forums shortly afterwards.

I just visited the forums again, and that section is still archived. Interestingly, Polish, German and French forums have Off-Topic sections, while English does not. Very strange policy from Bioware...

They have almost as much traffic as the WoW sub forum on a WoW fansite.

What can the rise of the off-topic sub-forums here be attributed to? What keeps users of a WoW fansite here specifically to have off-topic discussions?

For me, I don't play WoW anymore, but I very much enjoy the multi-national off topic community here. There are lots of different opinions and perspectives, lots of well informed and uninformed people, lots of subjects for discussion I'd probably be completely unaware of if not for these boards, since I'm not generally tuned into, for example, the political machinations in Croatia.

Also the OT forums here have pretty good moderation, allow for the discussion of politics and other such subjects that are forbidden on other forums, but don't let things devolve into echo chambers or meaningless shit flinging and hate speech.
