If the Olympics wants to keep moving forward they need to start sharing the money better with the host cities/countries and have set locations that they rotate every few years. That way places don't keep building these massive structures that are a single use building and then left to rot like Sochi.
I agree, a rotation would solve that problem.

They should just build an 2 Olympic islands if the IOC and host cities are willing to throw away so much money.

A bobsled course would be easy to repurpose wen ou choose a host nation with some winter sports enthusiasm.

Take the 2014 race. The IOC had the choice between Salzburg, Pyoengchang and Sochi. Salzburg had almost all of the infrastructure in place, they would use a bobsled run in nearby Bavaria and would just have to touch-up a few places. You also would have had a populace which is crazy for winter sports, overall they had a very reasonable plan. But no, they rather chose Sochi, which had to displace people, destroy a national park and subsequently hosted the most expensive winter olympics ever.

I'm not surprised that cities like Munich, Oslo, Salzburg, Innsbruck & Co. don't want to have anything to do with how the winter olympics currently are.

Hosting the winter games is a money pit. The reason I mentioned bobsledding is most buildings, fields or whatever the sport needs in summer games can be reused for multiple things. So when they do build things they have the hope of future use in most cases. A bobsled course is only going to be a bobsled course, same with the massive jumps and other things that can't be used in as many ways down the line.

That's what they have become, but they don't need to be. One of the reasons so many countries shied away from bidding for 2022 is how out of control the spending for Sochi was. But a sizable chunk of that was flat-out corruption and waste, with the bulk of the rest going to trying to build all the facilities in a place that had none of them. There are plenty of places that could host the Olympics with minimal new construction and renovation to existing facilities. Which I really with some place would do just to show that it can be done and you don't need to spend a fuck-ton of needless money. If some random town in the middle of Norway can do it there's no excuse.

Not really, as it happens to any vast country, there are cities/areas (specially in the South or in the countryside of Sao Paulo state) where the HDI is as high as Italy, and other areas where it is as low as a poor corner of Africa.

Yes, but moresoe my thoughts after watching the Vox video, and reading the replies, I'm of the view that it doesn't have to be.

My initial assesment that the IOC are a bunch of corrupt, beurocratic, scumbag, assholes, and the Brazillian officials responsible need to be dismembered and sent to sea.

Granted Brazil wasn't even a remotely qualified place or a good idea, but if the corruption wasn't in the IOC, and Brazil itself, they might have pulled it off *perhaps not as fancy as some would like*, but in a way that could be beneficial to the people, the poor people of Brazil.
That didn't happen of course. Ivory tower song and dance assholes...

The right way to do it was as was said, pick a country or two who will take it on. build a proper summer and winter Olympic park, maintain and reuse it.

Meanwhile mankind pisses away time, money and effort, when we should be colonizing space.

The term "third world country" comes from the Cold War. Coined in France during the 1950s, it referred to the "three worlds" that existed during the Cold War. The first world referred to the western democracies, more specifically those that made up NATO. The second world was the communist Eastern Bloc, the third world were those nations generally unaffiliated with either. This includes Brazil (and indeed almost all of South America which remained generally politically neutral in the broader sense during the Cold War, declaring support for neither bloc).

However, as many of the countries which fell into the third world category were, especially in the 1950s, generally poorer and less developed than the other two the term came to be associated with poor countries in general and the terms "first world" and "second world" never saw a lot of usage in favor of the NATO/Eastern Bloc and so have faded. But, by definition, Brazil is a third world country. So yeah, really.

the Rio Olympics should be postponed or canceled all together. the Zika outbreak, horrible conditions the athletes will have to compete in (swimming in sewage filled waters), the political turmoil going on there, it's all going to be a shit show.

Or you know, just host them in safer countries like the U.S., France, Germany, Australia, U.K., Japan, etc...

The part I liked most is the swimmer who said he got MRSA after swimming in that untreated toxic sludge they call water in Rio bay. Anyone going in there with a cut or scrape will likely dissolve before our very eyes.

They should have relocated the games 2 years ago.

They should have the summer Olympics in Greece and the winter Olympics in Sarajevo every year.

I want to know how the fuck they won the bid?

And it's common knowledge that the olympics are a drain on a country. All that money spent for what amounts to a weekend where shops sell to tourists. But how thy gonna sell when it's so dangerous no one leaves the village?

Why do we even allow places to set up these huge venues, then leave them to rot?

I like th olympics , but the way we do it is fucking stupid. I say put that shit back in Greece and make a permanent Olympic and establishment. Get rid of that committee too. The only thing they should be doing is testing for drugs and shit.
