Well, I don't think Duncan Jones has as many projects as Guillermo del Toro, and I don't see why Universal/Legendary would delay the movie once greenlit. If anything, they'd want these movies to arrive quickly and be among the first to ride the "China is now what matters" tide like they're doing with F&F.
One question regarding the 400m+ box office figure that Warcraft has achieved -- does that take into account that China only lets foreign companies take 25% of the box office, or do they get to effectively keep it all because Legendary is owned by Dalian Wanda Group, a Chinese company. Just curious about that for the purposes of a sequel
Who's to say DJ has to direct the sequels? I realize the terms for Pacific Rim's development clusterfuck are different from what a potential Warcraft sequel may be... but I think the underlying reason the movie is in development hell: the fact that the original film performed better abroad than domestically -- is exactly the same for both films.
We'll see in the next few months how things pan out for Warcraft's legacy. I'm a fan first and foremost so I would be delighted if we did get more films. But I'm also pragmatic realist and I would not be surprised at all if Warcraft's sequels end up in the ever-growing pile of potential franchises which failed to take off.
You don't have to be ... but you'd be an idiot to listen to that person unless you know for a fact you have almost the same exact tastes as you. If a random stranger told you not to go to a restaurant ... would you listen? If a michelin star chef told you, it probably would hold a little more weight, right? If JJ Abrams or James Cameron gave a movie review, I'd listen (which, lol at what James Cameron said about the new Star Wars ... it was pretty bad).
Movie critics are the most useless breed of people ... they would be on the B ark with all the telephone sanitizers.
Im usually on the ally side but damn those orc... badass and nice! That movie was horde ftw.
The humans was weak weak didn't look strong and weak, wish they made alliance more bulky or prettier idk lol.
Saw the movie for the first time this afternoon in what amounted to a private screening (which was pretty OK since the movie theater serves food and drink up in the 21+ balcony section).
Thought the movie was OK, not quite as good as I wanted it to be. Duncan Jones has said that people didn't need to know anything about the Warcraft universe to understand the movie but I don't think he's correct in that. The first hour would be pretty difficult to understand without some foreknowledge about who everyone is. Lot of characters introduced and motivations more presumed than completely apparent. Second hour was fine. The fight with Durotan and Gul'dan was great and it was something of a treat to see Gul'dan out of his robes and getting physical. So, fine but I think a miss for anyone who isn't somewhat up to speed on who everyone is.
Physically, quite beautiful and the CGI was fine. It's interesting that because there's so much of it, it tends to just fade into the fabric of the film. Anyway, technically well done and might grab an Oscar on that side of things. That's all I have to say other than when it comes out on DVD we'll certainly watch it a few more times just to inspect the thing for references and such.
Wasn't a waste of time or money to see it at all.
"...money's most powerful ability is to allow bad people to continue doing bad things at the expense of those who don't have it."
I disagree about anyone not understanding the movie based on that. I agree they wouldn't understand the characters or grasp at any motivation or depth they'd have, beyond "For as long as whatever, we've fought, here's how it started."
Plenty of movies have that issue, but I think this was worse based on cut exposition.

As a viewer though, if you're trying to sort out who someone is from a group of someones you've never seen before, you're not really following the story for those few seconds. And you can miss critical information like motive.
It's hard to know really because most of us here are or were pretty deeply immersed in the game at some point. Just a personal observation though and as always, people have their own perspectives on it. Personally I think there were too many characters introduced although I can completely understand why they are there. But that's an argument that the movie was really made for fans and not for people who have never heard of Azeroth.
"...money's most powerful ability is to allow bad people to continue doing bad things at the expense of those who don't have it."
Most people I went with simplified to "big green bad guy #5" and "that other bearded fellow," I expect most others who don't recognize people would do the same. I think our background knowledge might complicate things, even, while we try to match up what we know to what we see.

Pacific Rim isn't in development hell anymore:

Warcraft is the third most successful film in china this year right now, so just any other film wouldn't have made the same money.
It's basically like the same in the US, before Finding Dory was hitting the theatres the overall numbers in the cinemas were a lot worse than the last years for the last two months. One big viewer magnet can change your balances a lot.

These are my thoughts too. They would have done a lot better with a 5-10 minute "intro" to the universe. Or if they knew they were going to make more than one movie, leave this one as more of a building process. I love all things lore and warcraft, so I was able to follow pretty well, but my roommate wasn't. He asked a lot of questions about people and such.
You have no idea what flop is. Look it up in a dictionary. Getting the money back is not flop. Also making probably a small profit from box office alone is not flop. Making a nice amount of profit after DVD sales and TV runs is also not a flop at all. What you crazy nutty haters want to say by repeating "flop flop flop flop flop flop" is actually "the movie was not a great success". And even that only applies to US...
The movie is a box office bomb and it was more than obvious. 45 million in the US is pathetic.
Without China the movie would have been a financial disaster and even with China a box office ~ 400-450 million is anything but a success.
I am willing to bet their are a lot of people in the US who wanted to see it, but due to the stigma attached to WOW didn't bother; therefore, I suspect that it'll do pretty well in DVD/Blue-ray and Streaming sales. TBH, I'd rather see them continue the story via a TV series, where not only is it a lot cheaper, but they will have more time to develop the story and characters of Warcraft.
