I call them females, because "female" includes all age categories, while "woman" is usually someone starting in late teens. Same way, I say "male" instead on "man" when I talk about gender in general, since calling a 6 y/o kid "man" somehow sounds wrong. I even call myself a "guy" rather than "man", because "man" sounds like someone older than 30...
