    Horde Freedom from religion?

Are there any countries in the world where religion is banned? All the time you hear about people demanding the right to have there faith but what about peoples right to not have to have religion in there lives? For example church bells and mosque screaming/prayers. Would this be a good idea and do places like these exist/will they exist in the future?

To my knowledge, not since the Soviet Union. China used to ban religion, but gave up on the notion in the early 1980s. Officially, North Korea allows religion, but, in practice, they make it very hard.

Ban on all religions sounds pretty much like religion in itself.

I'm pretty sure the Soviet Union tried that once. Didn't work so well. Like it or not, many people are dependent on religion as a coping mechanism for their crappy lives, and it's part of the bundle of the whole "freedom of speech" deal, as it is an opinion. (Though any legislation that treats it with special exemption above other opinions I am obviously against, since there's no hard rules as to what constitutes a religion, you can literally just make one up like they did with Scientology)

Well, they have state religion where their glorious leader is their god.

France is actually the closest example, it's not a legal ban, but it's pretty heavily frowned up to display your religion in public.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

I could get behind that. It wouldn't be much different than these forums.

Last I checked China still has some mix of Folk religion and Mao worship

You'll usually find similar setup in other "atheist" dictatorships - North Korea is an easy example.

Op can you just say you hate religion and want it banned instead of throwing an indirect? That would be more sincere and more respectful.

As for your question, banning religions never worked well, ever. And its a stupid idea.

Freedom of/from religion is a classic constitutional debate. It doesn't need to discuss dogma at all, which is what they generally ban on these forums. This is not a topic on religion but on freedom.

Banning religious symbols and apparel from public spaces, like for instance public schools, should be the goal of any non-confessional state. But that can't, or should not, extend to the private exercise of religion if we're to defend individual liberties.
