How are people doing such high dps? (Warcraft logs)

It looks like a combination of assassination rogues, fire mages, ele shamans and unholy dk's in the mix. Some fights are so fast it doesn't look like they bring a healer, and only bring 1 tank.

The basis looks like ring, lust on pull, pot, everything and boss dies before lust runs out. How did 3-5 minute fights go to thirty second fights in the same item levels?

What's going on here that I'm missing?

    (Specifically Heroic HFC)

You are looking at people in full mythic warforged upgraded gear doing a difficulty that is below what they usually do. Their gear allows them to use less tanks and healers and even more dps.

Stuff like this snowballs into very fast kills

Were these fights 30 seconds long if not shorter prior to 7.0 though?

When they opened up HFC for retesting under patch 7.0.3 it was found that just about everyone was doing less damage than they were with patch 6.2.4. To offset the loss in damage Blizzard nerfed total healthpools by 50%. This was in most cases overkill but made sure that HFC would be easier than it was before which is usually their goal when nerfing the final raid tier of an expansion for pre-launch phase. The result of that reduction in health is bosses like Iron Reaver or Kormrok dying in the duration of the DPS Ring but those are of course extreme scenarios.

This is not a fact though. Blizzard usually nerf content prior to a new expansion and they didnt come out and say that they nerfed it to 50% because of peopel doing lower damage.

    Most likely its a combination

    Some were significantly shorter.

It's a combination of the ring, scaling ilvl (HFA 720ilvl -> Archimonde 735ilvl) and valor upgrades. Mostly the ring though, it's a 106.5% damage increase for 15 seconds.

The pre-patch nerf merely exaggerated the issue.

Yes. There were many tops log 16 second mythic Iron Reaver and mythic Fel Lord kills in 6.2. If anything, on the pull burst is a little lower in 7.0, but not much lower and 16 second mythic kills still happen.

Mythic raid gear is really OP.

Since we are more balance around 110 some classes will require less from there artifact where as some will require it more.

(Think Eye Beam currently a DPS loss single target on Prepatch due to no artifact!)

It is ridiculous that someone in ilvl 730 gear does double the dps of someone with 710. The scaling is so very not linear.

that because its exponential not linear. same thing will happen in legion when you will have people coming out of leveling with 805 itlv and people in mythic gear 895 , artifact wepaon will make it even worse for returning players

It's the burst. Blizzards nemesis was never greater than now - compared to MoP where they thought holding up to buffs would be the problem they have now a giant burst phase that makes additional procs of a trinket or whatever not even neccessary. The difference between constant dps and burst is just that big. 3x-8x+ of the normal damage. That's also why people with baleful, invasions or whatever gear in same ilvl can do shit - their dps is fixed on what they to constantly with minor increase during burst.

Even in full Mythic gear, I can tell you now they inflate those numbers with every trick in the book. A more accurate representation is on a fight recorded that's longer and with 3-4 healers, go by those guys.

Not to the same extent, secondary stat scaling was reduced down to ~.4% from ~.9% per ilvl.
