Is your guild switching to discord?

With Discord becoming the new FoTM in terms of VoIP are there any guilds out there that are going to switch to it for there VoIP coms?

I've had a play and although I do have Discord installed with a few chats for a few different topics I've not ventured into the VoIP and mainly seen it as an IIRC chat frame more then anything.

The idea of having 10-30 people inside a chat room on free software does worry me since there is very little control over server stability or indeed the level of control with such a high number of people.

Has any guilds swapped over to it for there raiding?

Personally; I just don't understand the finance side behind it. They have lots of partners and sponsorship deals going around, without seeing any way for it to be revenue stream. On there website they say they will be generating revenue from selling:
optional cosmetic items like sticker packs, sound packs, skins, and the like!
Now call me old fashioned but the price of hosting the multiple number of VoIP calls, the database requirements of all those lines of texts means that those shiny cosmetics aren't going to be covering the cost. Unless the sponsorship deals will become "Hey I'm XXXX buy my Discord skin for $5! (Oh BTW only $1 goes to me, but $4 goes to Discord!)" which again seems a very strange business model.

I do want to point out: I can understand that it might be replacing Skype as the PVP; but i want to hear about raiders.

Discord is good for games with LOTS of out of game information, it really lends itself to things like irc pings and coridinating with lots of channels. but from my experience in raiding a skype group text chat and using teamspeak would be better. I cringe when i hear people say they still use vent.

My guild has used it since June 2015 before it got big. There was some growing pains as it exploded in use, but overall we raid 9 hours a week and Discord was unusable for maybe 3-5 hours total since June 2015 for us.

We had concerns about the monetization of it, but they've always stated they have plans for it and that basic voice and chat will always be free. They even posted a privacy policy that stated they don't sell your information. No clue how they keep the lights on, but it works well!

No reason to for us, from what I see.
We have used Vent for 8 years so it would be silly to change at this point. Don't fix what isn't broken ya know?

When their business model doesn't make sense that's either a sign that they're gonna fold soon or they're probably doing something pretty shady behind the scenes. Both are good reasons to stay away from them. Also the fact that it looks like a Facebook app doesn't help things much for me.

A Mumble my guild and I used finally ran out of funding, so we've moved over to Discord. So far no complaints. I really like the UI with it's chat function.

My guild will actually switch at legion launch.

And outside of not having any whisper list option like TS (which may see us go back to teamspeak, will see once raiding is live again), I really like it.

We use Discord for organizing and guild chat that's available always, no matter what game people play. Discord voice chat has some issues and no-one has bothered even talking about changing from Teamspeak.

I don't know what you mean by whisper list, but you can definitely message single people by just right clicking their name

I don't intend to swap to it. If we swap to anything, it will probably be Curse voice. Just because.

I know Discord is wildly popular but I've had a lot of trouble in PuGs as a voice app; there's always a few people who can't get the sound to work. I guess that's true with just about any client, but it has historically been frustrating. I've nothing against it personally but it's had some growing pains and I wouldn't be pressed to switch unless there was a specific reason to. Text based? Great. Audio, meh.

I always keep all the major voice chat programs installed for PuGing (which I do a decent amount of on alts). The only one I won't use is Skype. FUCK. THAT.

This is a Function in TeamSpeak3. Whispering not being /w but voice chat between different people. For example your Voice Activation Button could be Space... but pressing Ctrl+Space would activate a private message to all Officers.

Think of it being Chat within a Chat.

We just use an officer text channel on discord and it works well and it keeps the history of the chat logs so you can go back to a previous discussion if needed.

edit: I agree that Discord lacks options for key binds thought for example server switching.

Oh right, like seperate key bind to talk to specific people. That's kinda toxic though tbh.

Historically, my guild hasn't been a raiding one. We've mainly just dominated the rated pvp ladders and that's been fine with us. We used to use Curse just because of the ease of access that it had especially when it came to having to invite the odd pug or two.
Curse just required a 4 digit code that you could give to everyone, and they'd all get directed to the same call. This was all well and good, but we've recently made a guild channel and it's just not as stellar with options as Discord. It's confusing to invite people to the channel and you have to make a separate call for randoms unless you want to deal with kicking them after your session.

We're going to be moving to Discord because of the channel system. Easy links for people with and without the downloaded client, and it works well for either version. And you can provide time limited links that automatically remove people from the channel after your session with them meaning that you don't have to regularly clear out randoms that you played with one time. You can also place limits on the amount of people in each room so for the purposes of pvp for instance, you could restrict a specific arena channel to only 3 people or whatnot.

We also have a text channel that's devoted to information on guild events, and game updates so that everyone can stay up to date on what's happening within the game and guild.

Discord ftw. Historically we used to use TS3 for the longest time, but since using Discord we probably won't won't go back to nything else now.

If anyone still uses Skype I feel sorry for them.

Is that really any different to party chat in a premade group in wow.
Or officer chat in a guild.

How people use it is what will or won't make it toxic.
    It isn't inherently.
There are reasons to talk to a minority, such as Loot Council.

I had a guild I raided with for a small time that used Skype. They used it so that everyone had open mic's all the time thus leading to a very open and honest raiding experience that had a very high amount of chit chat. Good thing it was only 10 man hc firelands at the time!
