School pulls ‘Finn’ and ‘Mockingbird’ over slurs: ‘not right to put that in a book"

The United States just elected a president who, whether he delivers on it or not, is promising heavily protectionist policy as a panacea to those who see financial stability slipping through their fingers or who have already lost it. His policies are imbecilic, unworkable, and idyllic and idealistic nonsense meant to be music to the ears of these people, who in turn advocate those positions themselves. On the basis of this, do I reject as reasonable the obvious underlying cause of their adoption and endorsement of this stupidity, which is the economic hardship and uncertain future they face? What they call for is an expression of the root cause of their unrest, and regardless of how dumb it is or how ineffective it would be, it has little bearing on the validity of their concerns. Conflating the their solutions with their concerns helps nobody. Even if their concerns do not hold water, it can still be reasonable to arrive at that conclusion from their perspective, and simply telling treating them with condescension and disdain because they're believed to be unreasonable does nothing to help anyone, other than offer a small ego boost to the one offering that condescension and disdain.

Listened to an NPR piece today, about how liberals and democrats facing such a crippling loss are now going to Republicans, especially the disenfranchised and saying "What don't I understand about you? Let me into your world." It's an understandable phenomena, and it's happening in droves. A hard right political science college professor (kind of an oxymoron but I guess they exist) was amazed at just how many were coming to him to understand more. So it's rather astonishing to see the left trying to reconcile their loss by understanding.

I thought I read that Huck Finn had been updated a few years ago removing all the racial language from it. Personally I'm against altering such things, and I don't think the books should be removed either, if anything they should be used as an opportunity to recognize how something in the past is no longer valid or how times have changed, but a lot of parents don't seem to sit down and have serious discussions with their kids anymore. I'd also love to know if the kid was really upset or Mom is just being upset for him.

I was. People just want to think slavery was the main issue to make themselves feel better. I'm sorry, but it was always about state's rights vs federal law and M-O-N-E-Y. Slavery and/or it's abolishment was one of those 'added perks'. I'm not proud to say that, nor proud to know it. I am however more enlightened than anyone who thinks that bloody war was the Fairy Tale it is so often spun out to be.

You should go read the articles of confederation. The right to keep slaves is the first thing mentioned in most of them, and barely any mention of state's rights beyond that.

Apparently not, if you can't even read the articles of confederation - the words of those actually starting the war. Their own words said it was over the inalienable right to own slaves.

You should go read the articles of confederation. The right to keep slaves is the first thing mentioned in most of them, and barely any mention of state's rights beyond that.

You have to keep in mind that back in that time having slaves to keep the farms up was their livelihood, sure it was a shitty thing to do but for them it was free labor. It would have been better if they had employed more of the locals and built up the system we now use. But just like today there were stupid greedy people.
As a direct descendant of Jefferson Davis, I think that we and the Brits/Portuguese should have never bothered with slaves to begin with.

Also the north was not as great either look what they did to the Irish emigrants.
