Why are fictionary military people in space so badass?

I understand where you and people that don't like it for that reason are coming from, but that's part of the fun for me.

The Imperial Guard is more in line of what I like traditionally in sci-fi military, but I do enjoy quite a few of the Astarte Chapter's lore.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it and I enjoyed the games. The figurines also look amazing.

Long time Trek fan, and here is my view on the subject of whether Starfleet is military or not. First I'd like to clear one thing up, as far as police are concerned, they are quasi-paramilitary, meaning they retain some military aspects but are not militaristic.

The definition of quasi-paramilitary is important because if you are going to argue that Starfleet is not military, this word best describes that idea.

Currently Starfleet is setup like the Navy and uses the equivalent rank and structure, does that make them military, no. This is a lot like police commands, who have ranks and structure similar to the army, but they are not military.

I know, this is where you start thinking that I agree that Starfleet is not military. No such luck, here is what defines Starfleet as military. Warships, if you are not military, but purely scientific in nature why do you have ships classified in the following manner:

Destroyer- a fast, long endurance, manueverable warship, used to escort other vessels in a fleet. Starfleet has at least one of these, USS Centaur, later dubbed Centaur class. This ship was used in the Dominion War.

Dreadnought- a battleship with heavy weaponary. Starfleet built 20 of these bad boys, otherwise known as the Federation class. You've seen it if you watched The Search for Spock.

Warship- This is the most telling designation, otherwise known as the Defiant class. Starfleet built 4 of these, the most well known to be based at DS9.

Personnel Carrier- or Erewon class. Yes I know, personnel can mean just about anything. Yet people forget Starfleet also has a Marine Corp. Scientists with marines?!?


So lets wrap this up with a pretty little bow. Starfleet deploys Marines in personnel carriers, they have 4 warships, 20 Battleships, and at least 1 Destroyer(that we know of) that they used to engage in wartime activities.

That doesn't sound like Peace Keepers to me.......MILITARY!!

it is obvious that Gene Roddenberry vison of star fleet was it was not a military. It obvious that the writers in DS9 did transfrom star fleet into a military, they make a big deal that star fleet did get its first warship, and star fleet fight a war agenst the Dominion.

Uniforms, rank structure, hierarchy, etc, those don't mean it's Military run. Fire Fighters and Police use the same thing and we don't consider them Military.

thats because fire fighters and police dont have their own courts Militarys like Starfleet do.
