Immigrants don't come over with already established wealth, and the vast majority do come here to make a better life for themselves. Wealth doesn't come to someone in a year or two either, and in most cases, the older parent immigrants never do make it out of poverty, and it's the children who begin to see an increase in wealth.

Well, to be fair, there were different immigrants. Some would arrive already wealthy, to enjoy the relative freedom and independence from (at the time) more oppressive regimes. Others would be, like me, average folks who came to the US in the search for better life. Finally, like you mentioned, there were many people - especially from less wealthy and modern states - arriving with next to nothing in their pockets, forced to live in ghettos, and sometimes even do a slave-level kind of work to survive.

Overall, especially since the vast majority of Americans are immigrants or descendants of immigrants, I don't think immigrants here face a particularly special treatment. An average immigrant probably has a harder time than an average born citizen, but I don't think the difference in that high.

That said, some categories of immigrants at certain times were treated truly awful. Even ignoring the slavery history, there was anti-Irish nationalism, Japanese internment camps, African immigrants apparently weren't treated very well until very recently... Like any country, the US has had its dark aspects.
