Thumbs up Amanda Todd’s accused cyberbully facing 11 years in Dutch prison

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch prosecutors on Thursday sought the maximum possible sentence – nearly 11 years – for a man charged with cyberbullying dozens of young girls and gay men and who is also wanted in Canada for his alleged involvement in the cyberbullying of B.C. teen Amanda Todd.

In an emotional closing statement, prosecutor Annet Kramer urged judges at a court in Amsterdam to sentence the 38-year-old suspect, Aydin Coban, to 10 years and eight months in prison, saying he subjected some of his victims to years of emotional abuse.

“To do justice in any way to the gravity of the facts, and the refined way in which the suspect systematically put his own interests far above those of his victims, the prosecution believes that there is no room to impose anything other than the maximum sentence,” Kramer told judges at a high-security Amsterdam courthouse, according to a written copy of her statement.

In Canada, C. faces a separate trial in the cyberbullying of Todd, a 15-year-old girl who drew global attention to online abuse when she posted a YouTube video recounting her ordeal. She later took her own life.

In that case, C. faces charges including extortion, possession of child pornography and attempting to lure a child online. A Dutch court has approved the suspect’s extradition following his trial in Amsterdam. He has appealed that decision and denies involvement in any cyber bullying.

Todd brought cyber bullying to mainstream attention in Canada and around the world in 2012 by posting a video in which she told her story with handwritten signs, describing how she was lured by a stranger to expose her breasts on a webcam.

The picture ended up on a Facebook page made by the stranger, to which her friends were added. She was repeatedly bullied, despite changing schools, before finally taking her own life weeks after posting the video

In his Dutch trial, the man faces more than 70 charges linked to the alleged abuse of 34 young girls and five gay men.

Prosecutors allege that the suspect used aliases on online chat sites to portray himself as a woman or boy to befriend his victims. He would persuade them to strip in front of their webcams and then use the images to blackmail them, according to prosecutors, threatening to post the images online if they did not perform more sex acts in front of their webcams.

Wow this really would be a big time win. Obviously I would prefer a longer sentence but 11 years is pretty substantial.
I remember watching her video when the incident first happened and it was so sad to see how someone could exploit a young girl like this.

I remember seeing her video and feeling miserable after it. Can't even imagine how she was.

No pity for these pathetic trolls.

Getting bullied online isn't a thing. Who is forcing them to log on and read abuse?

If I open a message that starts with 'Dear Cunt' I'm unlikely to keep reading

I'm not sorry for that slut, also mother should be more aware what her child is doing online.

    That's you.

Not everyone is going to do what you do, and not everyone has to.

You don't have the right to invalidate someone else's feelings just because you don't share them.

    This right here.

ERMAGERD Someone called me mean names! Burn them at the stake!

If you hurt yourself or do something stupid because of what someone says to or about you, you are a psychological weakling whose parents failed at their job.

I literally do not care what anyone says about me online.

Threaten to skullfck my mother? Call me a 400 lb gastropod? Suggest I go drink Drano?

Yeah, but if anyone dares to disagree with you, you go from zero to "mad out of 10" in 3 seconds flat.
If you didn't care, you wouldn't acknowledge it.

Who's the psychological weakling whose parents failed in that scenario?

Its funny, you literally have no idea what she went through. Her having to change school should tell you that she was most likely bullied IRL as well.

People are major douches as soon as they can hide behind their computer, its saddening

As always the irony in this thread is going to be the people saying how much bullying sucks and conveniently ignore their history of lashing out/bullying/throwing a fit on MMO-C when people say something they don't agree with.

I'm not angry at all lol. I just think people who crumble at the words of others are weaklings. My care cup for their invented personal problems is empty.

Words are empty air. OTOH, if someone actually physically does something to cause someone harm, then throw them in a hole, close the door, and padlock it.

And as I said before, if they actually physically laid hands on her, throw them in jail.

If they just called her names ( to her face or on the PC), shts given = zero.

    I agree.

Trolling is a thing. Bullying another. And there's people going way to far, that's for sure.
But seriously, for the most part, people need to grow the fuck up.

As always, you strawman the real issue to some shallow and thin veiled bait attempt at trying to sound remotely intelligent.

Cyber bullying is illegal in Britain, don't think it's illegal in the US but you can get sued over it, we sue over everything in the US.

Any description of what this supposed "anti-bullying app" actually does? The video doesn't really go into the What, just the Why.

On the contrary, she changed schools and the rumors followed her around, so it doesn't get much more pervasive than that.

With that being said, it is obvious that an adult failed somewhere along the line for the situation to have degenerated that far.

Lol, that's a whole new mountain of stupid.

What's next? Locking people up for hurting your feelings by having a different opinion?

Well there is a line when it comes to hurting peoples feelings and/or harassment/intimidation.

If I tell you "go fuck yourself" its different than following you around for an hour and telling you to "go fuck yourself".

    Context matters I imagine.

Fuck the guy who got sentenced in this case, it was clear he was a serial weirdo of some sort.

People must be ignoring that this isn't an isolated case. This is a full grown adult basically cyberstalking multiple kids and teenagers, attacking them online through fake accounts to get around blocks, spreading rumors, blackmailing them, and putting new rumors at their new schools and such when the kids try to flee.

It's not a case of a kid calling some other kid and idiot or threatening to take their lunch money.

(edit: this is before even getting into the child porn stuff.)
