@OP To me a moderate is a person that is open to discuss the issue from different points of view. It does not necessarily imply a "middle ground" position though, even if that tends to happen most of the times, especially in politics, because compromise often is the go-to solution. Basically, the difference between a moderate and a right/left-wing die-hard is that the moderate does not really care which side of the political spectrum comes up with the solution, as long as the solution makes sense. So to answer to the OP question, it is hard to be moderate because it requires people to challenge their own assumptions and to keep an open mind.
