Even if they aren't "obligated", shouldn't they be criticized for it? Especially when it was already complete but was removed for ideological/political reasons completly unrelated to the game? Being a kickstarter game only builds up the point that should have done nothing, because they already had made the money they needed, so they didn't "risk comercially success" by leaving JonTron in.

Also, as far as I'm aware their response and mockery of refund requests was not limited to kickstart backers, as far as I know (considering you have been able to pre-order on steam and other online and phisical stores for monhts), but I could be wrong on that.

Steam would handle refunds on steam. Refunds would be handled by those offering preorders, not the developer. A lot of devs, indie especcially, are mad about steam refunds, but if they want to use steam as a means to sell their product they have to live with their games being refundable.
