The question is..m why the fuck they were so short sighted? They knew, and went with it anyway? How stupid can the be?

Yeah that's why the house majority leader, a Trump confidant, is on tape saying before the election that he believes Trump is on Putin's payroll, and Paul Ryan then swears all the republicans in the meeting to secrecy.

    That's absolutely normal isn't it?

For the people that asked about special prosecutor vs special counsel, here's the difference. In summation, the old law created to fight Watergate made a special prosecutor/independent counsel that had to answer to a three judge panel outside of the DOJ to prevent shit like Nixon firing AGs until he finds someone to fire the special counsel. The special counsel still answers to and can be fired by the AG and DAG. Dems joined Rs in letting the law expire when the Lewinski scandal broke and they got a taste of the medicine they put down Nixon's throat. So, there you go. Special prosecutor =/= special counsel and Mueller's boss's boss is still Jeff Sessions.

Great summary - I wasn't certain of the situation. Thanks for that.

    I don't think anyone did.

The Republicans covering for the Russians? Go back in time 5 years and tell me that and I think most people would have laughed at you.

You know where I think this started? Reince Preibus' 2012 election post mortem, that basically said, the Republican Party needed to reach out to Latinos, Minorities, the educated and the young and modernize. It pretty much nailed it And what happened? Litterally the itemized exact opposite of the post mortem. It was very clear that the party, in a choice between modernization and holding on to a waning power base, chose the former.

They became desperate, and compromised themselves.

Well yes, you are completely correct. Impeachment doesn't mean removal from office, it's easy to overlook that.
Still Clinton's lying under oath about getting some in the Oval Office; versus the realization that Trump's campaign, and well it would have to include Trump as well worked with the "Russians" to get elected for whatever benefit or dealing that means are hugely different. Not to mention Trump just wants to throw more ammo for further impeachment procedings, recording conversations, willfully trying to influence on-going investigations (telling Comey to stop investigating Flynn, not firing Comey, that guy needed to be fired), to whatever unprofessional, unpresidential action he takes tomorrow or on twitter.

If impeachment happens, Trump is done. It's not like there are positives to his Presidential resume that would keep him around. This isn't Slick Willy at the end of two terms after all he did for the country.

Strangely enough Louise Mensch (who comes across as batshit crazy) has been saying something along these lines. Her blog is insane with some of the allegations its made but another one seems to have just come true. This is what she said about Paul Ryan

    https://patribotics.blog/2017/05/11/...e-against-gop/

On Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, normally third in the line of succession, I can report as fact that sources say that Ryan has been legally intercepted, and is on tape, admitting that he knew Russian money was being laundered into the Republican party. Without co-operation pending resignation Ryan may find himself swept up into a RICO prosecution involving the apparatus of the Republican party who accepted laundered Russian money.
Note that if Putin is paying Trump then some of those funds probably flowed into his campaign. Ergo Russian money was financing the GOP.

It's more likely he would be forced to resign, much like Nixon's AG did, if it actually came to that. There would be absolutely nothing illegal about firing people until the counsel gets fired, just like how Congress could immediately impeach President Trump for it. I actually like the old rules quite a bit, judges with little to no political connections would be better oversight than a partisan Congress (where the party in power would drag feet on investigating a president in their party or witch hunt a president outside their party) and infinitely better than answering to the executive branch the counsel is supposed to investigate. Congress is also far more partisan today than it was in the Nixon era, so I think it was a mistake to let the law expire.

That said, Mueller has my utmost respect. If he says that his investigation turns up nothing on Trump or his campaign, I'm going to believe him unless some major leaks come out that contradict it.

I hope all of this is true, we would get General Mattis as President. He is the perfect pick because he doesn't want to be President. Why would anyone want such a shitty job with so much responsibility and crap pay?
