    British Banter

http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...t-to-americans inspired me to make this thread...

So a common theme across most Brits is our devotion to banter (friendly piss taking) it's a rather staple tradition among Brits to use banter with people we like. It's a good way at seeing where your friendship is if you can take the piss out of each other without upsetting but obviously to those outside this may seem malicious so my question is this; Do you understand British banter?

Yes I understand it, we have this banter in Iceland as well.
“A man will contend for a false faith stronger than he will a true one,” he observes. “The truth defends itself, but a falsehood must be defended by its adherents: first to prove it to themselves and secondly, that they may appear right in the estimation of their friends.”

This happens in Canada too. Although to be honest, it seems like it mostly happens among "redneck" people - At least in my limited experience.

Pretty used to as my friends and cousins have all done this throughout the years here in the US and still do.

Also, when I was raiding late nights, the Aussies would ave a field day with each other and everyone. Still have a few on my friends list and we fuck with each other still while playing different games.

    We call it trash talking.

We don't do the sarcasm thing so we take British sarcasm literally.

Is there any culture that doesn't indulge in trash talking in some way or another?

I don't think banter is unique to us Brits.

Yo momma's so fat, she has to wear six different watches: one for each time zone.

A little odd of a claim. I know tons of sarcastic people in NY, and I myself can be pretty sarcastic.
Just depends on where you live in the US.

Isn't it sarcasm a lot of Americans don't get? Or was it irony? I know it's one of the two.

I totally agree many Americans 'do sarcasm. I think what non brits struggle with is working out IF a brit is being sarcastic.

On a different note...watching American reactions to a very well spoken (English nationality) colleague who happened to be black.
