They did. As did the monkeys, chimps, and gorillas. They evolved into their niches, respectively.
We just managed to progress to a lot of intelligence in a relatively short span of time, the intelligence helping us adapt to darn near any environment, fueling the process. If another animal, let's say bears, progressed in that direction over the next few million years, we, already being well ahead of them, would probably subjugate or kill that population before it became a threat.
Octopuses are smart enough to open jars, so we have them do it for our amusement.

Really? A story written by humans says that humans are the greatest species ever, had the entire universe made just for us and deserve to rule over the planet. Fancy that.
