Yeah, but this has been going on for 2 years. Something is only being done now because a Reddit post blew up about it last week which caused Tim Pool, Philip DeFranco and a bunch of other youtubers to make videos about it. And these videos had been reported tens of thousands of times over the course of two years. And like I said before, if you go far enough down the rabbit hole, it leads to real child porn videos. Like naked kids in the bath having needles shoved in their butts. Youtube has absolutely known about this for a long time, and they've done fuck all about it because there was no public outcry.

That just made this whole thing about a hundred times worse, and it was already gross. I hate people.

Oh, and can we stop calling every single controversy [Controversy]Gate? Seriously, that's lazy as hell.

But yeah, 'bout damn time. Never thought I'd be on the "Think of the children!" side at my age.

There's legitimate and illegitimate times to 'think of the children'. In this case, I think it's fair, because you have a situation where children are explicitly being targeted in a malicious and potentially harmful way. It's only bullshit when it's used to try and stifle something that really has nothing to do with children for fear that a child might, possibly, encounter it.

I don't know if Youtube is ever going to win the demonitisation war, whatever rules they program into the bots just cause the next round of the arms race.

That was intentionally marketed to adults though.

Since it's been happening for almost 50 years now, I guess not.

Hey bright side, maybe whatever finally takes down Trump will have a convenient one-syllable suffix that will supplant it.

I don't know how "Elsagate" has reached any sort of resolution, if Youtube is content to let its content be machine-sorted and stamped with an "OK for Children!" mark as suitable for their consumption.

If the parents were letting their kids randomly surf the net (or youtube) without any oversight, that's one thing, and they'd bear responsibility... but this is a site that *should* already be ok for children.

Is it really that bad to get some sort of peer-review system in place to ensure content isn't blatantly abusing the weaknesses in the system.

And is it frightening to anyone else that the next generation of humans are being raised and educated by machines ?

I'm not sure what is worse, the shitty parents of today (which is like 90% tbh) that only put their kids in front of a tablet to watch youtube or the continued saga of "The fecadalic adventures of the Youtube algorithm".

Because it exists solely on the premise that it is "safe for kids" ?

I'd rather have their kids watching a tablet while they're shopping/travelling than screaming their heads off while OD'd on soda and candy.

Only bad parents put their children in front of a screen unattended.

A few months back, I let my 5-year-old watch some My Little Pony videos on youtube. That went fine until one started playing where one character began to torture and dismember the other character...

    OH HELL FUCKING NO!

Other than a Pancake Manor playlist, I have put the rest of youtube off limits to her.

You left your child unattended to watch whatever on YouTube? Ffs I'm an uncle and even I have the sense to make sure I know what my nephews are going to watch before letting them watch it.

Its still funny to see that ppl are making that shit in the first place.

The Youtube culture is so twisted now, it's what happens when a site gets into titan status. I don't blame them for going sweep mode, but i don't think they have any other option. They don't have an overseas underground sweat shop filled with thousands of underpaid ppl hand sifting out all the shitty content. And whatever algorithms they're playing with are just fucking everything up for the good creators.

It's time for a new site to stick a heart into Youtube. Just kill it already, dear god, please..

    .
    That isn't how it started.

The real world is often a gritty, dark, and violent place, and that's just a reality everyone faces eventually. Parents bubble their kids away from it for their safety until their old enough to learn to deal with what the real world is like. Therefore it is the responsibility of the parents to govern what is okay for kids to watch, NOT for the world to conform to that very limited standard within that bubble.

YouTube was always meant to be a platform where you could upload just about anything, provided it wasn't breaking any laws like nudity, sex and excessive violence, but parents would sooner have the entire internet changed to meet their limited standards rather then take responsibility for their own actions.

And what makes you think a new site won't go down that same path as YouTube has? Think you underestimate society as a whole

I'm just saying that the more a platform gets popular and bloated, the more out of control it gets. Thanks for being condescending, but i expect nothing less on the internet.

I didn't say it wont go down the same path, i'm saying that introducing something fresh and new will breathe some new life into that side of the internet (for a time). Of course, not an easy feat to pull off, or else it'd exist by now. And not to say that smaller platforms go without abuse either (ala twitch, not that small but not youtube status either, attracting a lot more camgirls..)

What hurt is there in switching gears? Probably more hassle for the purer content creators. But it doesn't hurt to speculate, because those creators are getting fucked over as it is. The algorithm is broken for a while now. It's causing more and more problems for an increasing amount of people. That is all.
