    Neutrinos Now Obey Speed Limit

You guys might remember a few months ago, the scientists at OPERA announced that they found an apparent discrepancy between the measured speed of neutrinos and the expected speed (close to the speed of light).

Looks like they found the reason. Apparently, a signal delay the size of the discrepancy was created by a bad cable connection. :-) I have to say, that has to be one of the more embarrassing possibilities for a systematic error.

lol, so one of the most advanced research facilities had a bad cable connection ? :\

They went with Charter, their fault :P

Anyway, not surprised, given how much could actually go wrong with that. I remember a link here somewhere recently that had somebody talking about exactly how much could have gone wrong.

    That was rather fast,pun intended.

Well this was silly to begin with. People started spewing all the broken physics that would follow the result. Nothing can travel faster than light.

    i'd say it was slow.

Well that's too bad. I was kind of hoping we'd open up new mysteries in the universe.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Then I move that we vote to increase the speed of light.

I remember all the people who championed this result when it came and treated us skeptics as sore losers. Sucks to be them.

well, theres always just one winner.. no reason to be a dick about it :P

I heard theories about how it moved in a different dimension and by doing so actually kept to the relatavity theory...

This is so much easier to comprehend

Except by winning this argument all of mankind has lost out.

Im wondering when are we going to discover how to create portals (if they exist, of course)

The scientists who 'discovered' they traveled FTL, were skeptical themselves. They spent all this time trying to figure out where the bad data was. No shocker.

while im sad that this didn't turn out to be true, i am glad that the general public of the western world now has a bit of an insight into how the scientific process works.

someone sees something unexpected, tells people about it, some try to repeat the results, others try to disprove the findings, and in the end they come to the truth of what happened.

    haha, don't fool yourself there.
This coming from news networks where if it snows a lot or if it's really cold one day that global warming is immediately disproven.

    Yay scientific method!
"Hmm, this doesn't meet expected results, let's test it a bunch. Oh, dodgy cable, let's get back to particle smashing!"

As an engineer who routinely handles high level technical support issues I feel really bad for the guys who didn't catch the bad cable. This stuff happens, though they'll probably be a bit more hesitant before releasing info to the masses in the future.

200 years ago physicans said its imposible to generate ultraviolet light-rays because u need endless amounts of energy.

nowadays they say nothing can be faster then light .. or fast as light because u need endless amounts of energy...
