    I'm squishy...and I CANNOT figure out why!

I decided to try rift out for the heck of it. I've very much enjoyed tanking in the past, so I figured I'd level as a tank in Rift.

The problem is I've been told I'm "squishy". To the point that I've been kicked from dungeons. Fae/Iron tombs were doable. Darkening Deeps was rocky. Deepstrike mines is where I got kicked.

I've done my best to pick up the best gear I can. I can't find any kind of "armory" on the main website or else I'd link that, but right now I'm sitting on 2404 health, 2455 armor, 129 endurance, 67 dodge, 123 parry, and 139 block. I've tried both the defender and dark thane defensive builds provided by Trion. I've looked online for other specs and only found outdated stuff.

This is getting really frustrating...so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.

    EDIT:

Something like this should work quite well for you, I found the self healing that reaver offered at lower levels really helped and it offers quite a decent bit of damage mitigation, while the abilitys the reaver soul offers makes it easy to blast through dungeons and keep agro

Lemme know how it works out for you ^^

I'm liking this spec so far. How would you recommend I continue investing points?

Try this guide for a dungeon by dungeon guide: http://ciderhelm.com/?p=359

It's a little old now, but most of what is said is still relevant and works. Ciderhelm was pretty much the go-to tanking guy for RIFT for the first six months or so.

What in the hell is a Dark Thane? o_O

    Class and specs please.

Fencers, go into your talent screen and check out the prebuilt souls. It's one of the warrior presets.

Yea those preset builds alot of them are pretty terrible. In a future patch the intent is to allow us to submit builds and people will vote on them and Trion will put the top 5 for each class in the game. It was mentioned off the cuff in an interview but I haven't heard anything about it since, I hope they still do that cause the community has some great builds, much better than what Trion has put forth.

    What in the hell...

Did Trion make a Teleporting Sniper build for Rogues as well?

I've found that most of the times "squishy" tanks are moreso lazy healers.

Healing even in low level dungeons requires quite a bit of work from the healer and support that a lot of players probably aren't used to.

See, I think it's a bit of both. I used the spec that Seatin recommended and I felt less squishy overall. However, it still feels like the healer starts complaining if a trash pull knocks her down to 75% or I hit below 50% health while a bunch of mobs are still up.

Even when I was dying, I was dying over the course of six, seven seconds, without seeing any real big heals go on me. To me, from a WoW perspective, that's a significant time to go without big heals, but I'm not sure how Rift is engineered in that regard.

Yup. That build has been around awhile though. Since beta in fact.

You missed the joke I was making.

Seems to me like the healer sucked

Wow, I actually wrote a massive response on how you could slightly improve Seatin's build, which abilities to use and how to continue your point investment, for some reason it's disappeared and been replaced with 'double post', weird..

I would use something like http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c...zhdoM0z.g0o.-5 at level 26 and progress it as follows:
    Level 32: http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c...zhukG0k.g0o.-5
    Level 36 Respec: http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c....x0o.xLzV0z.-5
    Level 41: http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c....g0o.xezV0z.-5
    Level 45 Respec: http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c....x0o.xLzV0z.-5

I pretty much used those exact specs when I levelled my alt recently and was able to chain pull entire dungeons at the intended level wearing just questing gear and drops.

Then it's the healer's fault, not yours. I haven't played Rift for a few months, but back then atleast, damage and healing was spikey. Probably more so than WoW in fact, especially healing. Healing half health in one heal and shiz like that, even leveling. I'm pretty sure it's a healer issue, not your tanking.

Unfortunately, I'm the one that got kicked for it.

And to be fair, the spec I changed to is working better. I'm soloing bigger stuff too and overall I'm liking the spec.

Partly I'm disappointed because I like playing warrior tanks and feeling like a "warrior" tank...that is, someone who charges in with a car door strapped to his arm with nothing but angry words and the strength of his fists to keep him going. That tank just doesn't seem to exist in Rift.

Oh they do, as you get higher level and have more points to play with you'll find it. And then gear makes a huge difference.
