well starving yourself certainly works (i lost a ton of weight when i got severe tonsilitis and im pretty thin anyway) but changing your diet and doing some exercise is most likely the most comfortable and healthy way you can do it. Work out when your taking in lots of calories, dont eat high carb meals in the evening etc. Losing weight is easy you just need to be in control of what you eat, not just eat whatever you feel like.

let me save you time, and avoid stupid comment like starve yourself.
1 - cut the soda completely
    2 - drink more water.
3 - I recommend oxyelite if you are going to take a supplement, won't make you heart feel funky like arson and hydroxycut.
4 - Increase cardio, elliptical, but I recommend running, usually as soon as you wake up.
5 - Cut the amount of food you eat from prior since obviously you ate too much and got fat.

those are my experience with weight loss threw the marines corp. Since you have to maintain a certain weight, I do that all the time, but once your metabolism speeds up, you can increase the amount of food.

Also be aware that lifting burns more calories over time than running. Running is better done in the morning right after waking up, it will increase your hurt rate and metabolism for the rest of the day.

those are advice and may vary from person.

If you want to lose weight to be healthy, don't starve yourself... you will have to break your fast eventually and you will get it back. Go for moderate long term goals.... 5-7 lbs a month. If you lose it at a slow constant rate, you won't get it back after 3-4 months

I would say don't fast... it can screw up your metabolism. The healthiest way is to just eat healthy and exercise regularly.

Basically you want to begin exercising regularly. At first you may not be able to run, start out doing fast-paced walking and eventually moving on to jogging and running.
Basic weight lifting/training will also help in weight loss and toning.
You need an overhaul on your diet and to cut out bad foods and soda, juice, etc.

We shouldn't have to tell you what foods to eat as you know personally what is good for you and what is bad. Eating 4 chocolate bars is obviously not good for you while you could instead have an apple.

There are plenty of websites and guides to what foods you can eat and training websites for working out.

Motivation, dedication and persistence is really what's going to be the deciding factor on if you lose weight.

Also, don't set a goal like "I want to lose 40 pounds" because if you lose 40 pounds you're going to say "Oh I made my goal, and can now return to old habits." This will just set you back and you'll be 40 pounds heavier again.

Just work out and your only goal should to be a bit healthier everyday that you wake up and trust me you'll be very happy with the way you look if you just follow that mindset.

I lost 100 pounds in the last year by doing Insanity and watching what I ate and I bet you can do the same

    Good luck

i wasnt suggesting you actually starve yourself...he just wanted to know what the quickest way was and the person above me suggested fasting. I ofcourse would never recommend starving yourself as a good way to lose weight

Try increasing the amount of protein you eat, such as meat, and fish. Have something like a salad with some tuna or chicken on top for lunch and you can have steak for dinner. Try reducing the carbs you eat, try having pasta one night a week or only having a sandwich every few days instead of all the time. There are many other options I just found when losing weight eating more meat and veges and less carbs worked best for me.

Also go for a walk (less stressful on your body compared to a run) each day. Just start off as a walk around the block if you are unfit or if you are fit try for a 1 km walk and work your way from there. Its best to try and do half hour of exercise most days, but simply substituting stairs for an elevator will do

Also cut out fried foods and sweets they are some main offenders in weight gain

    Good luck

Starving yourself is the WORST thing you can do. Your metabolism will actually slow down and your body will store as much fat as it can, going into "famine mode"

I lost half a stone in a week by following a healthy low-fat diet, working out four times a week (an hour of aerobics, and an hour of pilates) and cutting out sugary drinks (as an energy drink addict, this was hard) ALWAYS eat breakfast, people who skip breakfast are more likely to snack and put on weight, plus breakfast kick starts the metabolism. Drink plenty of water, avoid flavoured brand water like Volvic though, their flavoured water is packed with sugar.

Set small goals for yourself, and allow yourself to feel pleased when you reach those goals.

EDIT: Just saw your above post. If intense exercise is too much for you, definitely go for walks. Stick some music on your mp3 player, and walk, enjoy it. It's a good exercise in itself and is good for weight loss and getting fitter, but don't push yourself too hard

Regular exercise and a decent diet. Chicken salad ftw!

But yeah, even if you just walk for an hour in the morning or evening, it'll help.

Fasting is actually terrible for you because it slows your metabolic rate down, so when you reach your target weight you'll pile it back on very fast. The proper thing to do is to reduce the amount you eat but eat more often. Small portions very frequently will boost your metabolism, combined with exercise every day and your body will burn the weight off.

Of course nobody does this because it's not easy so.... liposuction?

First, it needs to not be about losing weight, it needs to be about a life style change and a commitment to make that change permanent. Setting a reasonable and realistic goal for yourself gives you something to work for and after that, focus on maintaining where you want to be. Use multiple methods for tracking your weight loss beyond just what a scale says. Take body measurements and tracking body fat are other excellent ways to show loss.

Research the different methods and find something that works for you. If it's not something that will work for you and you cannot commit to, it will not be successful no matter how much you want it to be. There are a lot of excellent resources out there to help you out.

One that I myself have been following and have met with excellent results is following Tim Ferris and what he has set up in his book "The Four Hour Body"

It's a change in what and how you eat to best enhance your body to burn fat and help you lose weight. The exercise requirements are minimal and focus more on building lean muscle mass (which aids in burning more fat and calories) over cardio, and the method is actually extremely easy to follow. Does not require much in the way of having to track everything you eat or having to count calories. Best part is that it has a built in "cheat day" that gives you the freedom to eat all that other stuff that you shouldn't be having and satisfy your cravings, without sabotaging the weight loss.

Eat less, exercise more; that's what i'll be doing come April.

Serious question though from a health noob; what are 'low carb' things to eat, if high carb food are supposedly the enemy? Don't cereals/bread and all those other things we consider to be good and healthy have loads of them?

Yeah, basically along these lines. When I needed to lose weight, I went with something called Body for Life by Bill Phillips. My wife and I both did it and we lost a good deal of weight. The thing about it is, you're not going to get drastic results but you will lose about 1.5 - 2 lbs a week. The thing about the program we really liked was you really learned to eat healthy and it was more of a lifestyle change going forward. For instance, I'm not doing it anymore but I learned to eat the right way so now even though I'm technically off the program, I didn't go back to my old ways and I know how to keep the weight off, even when I'm not exercising. You don't have to buy any special food or pills or any of that crap, just follow the advice he gives in his book and you'll be on your way. You get to eat real foods and it's something you can easily do. In his book, he does push his protein shakes and bars but you don't have to buy any of it, although that stuff does make for an easy meal once in a while so don't discount it.

One thing that also helped me when losing weight, set a long term goal of , I think you said, 50 lbs but set short 5 or 10 lb goals. If you set one goal of 50 lbs, and you lose 2 lbs, you're still 48 lbs off and you'll probably get discouraged. Try 5 or 10 lbs to keep the goals within distance and maybe use other things like trying to get down one notch on your belt or something like that. I found that setting the short term goals kept me on track, and if I had a bad week or whatever, it really was still manageable.

    Good luck!

Low carb just means you eat less carbs and more Protein/Fat (good fats -- yes there is such a thing).

If you're going for the low carb thing, I'd suggest eating things very low in calories, but high in vitamins/fiber: Like vegetables.

Also, the idea behind low carb nutrition is to reduce your insulin response. If you eat a lot of carbs, your pancreas releases insulin to level out your blood sugar. If you don't use that sugar via exercise or something, where does it go? The really basic answer is that it's stored. That's bad. Going for lower amounts of carbohydrates (eating the right ones that will release over time and such) allows you to get more of your energy from your stored fat cells.

The idea is to be efficient about your eating. I could go into a lot more detail if you really want. Just let me know.

Google works very well to answer that question.

Many of the foods we eat are healthy for us. The issue is that we consume far too much of it. Also, many of those cereals and breads are faster digesting. The result is we get hungry again quicker, and eat more. At the end of the day our caloric intake is higher than what we burn and the result is weight gain. A good portion of the foods found in a low carb diet are also slow digesting carbs, which means we stay fuller, longer, and in return, eat less. The result is a lower caloric intake and with exercise, particularly one that builds lean muscle, we burn off excess calories and don't put on excess weight and/or lose weight.
