You could follow artistic precedence and cut off your ear to present to her. Or you could not make a big deal about it, and assume that if she's agreed to be your prom partner, she at least likes you back and therefore there should be less tension in telling her. I'm personally in favor of building up a long term relationship, where after getting to know each other very, very well, the relationship has gone past the point of requiring the words themselves to know that you two care about each other.

I'm not saying desperate and fast is good, but if you start off being her friend she will just friend zone you, and then when you actually go for it, you lose a friend in addition to a possible relationship partner.

well first you need to see if she takes interest in you or sees you more of a friend , you can get some ideas by paying some more attention to her body language around you and see the way she talks to you and the way she talks to her other friend if you see the difference you know she's into you as well ,
