Why do women seem to think it's okay for them to be sexist?

I am the only male in my Sociology course. In this class I constantly hear women state that all men rape, oppress, and abuse women. They often times cite police reports of rape, spousal abuse, and sexual harassment to "support" their claim which they present as fact. While I feel that this is a bogus method for proving your point (it would be similar to arguing that all black men were violent criminals and citing gang-related shootings in the inner cities), but I never say anything because I just want my credit hours.

Well last Thursday my Professor asked the class why they thought men were generally hunters in hunter-gatherer societies. I didn't want to say anything, but she finally pointed me out and said "sorry, you are the only male, so I want to hear what you have to say." All I said was that I thought it would be hard for a woman to hunt when she was pregnant for 10 months, and it would be hard for a male to nurse babies without breast milk and pointed out that even in modern hunter-gatherer societies that it isn't uncommon for males to stay gone for days at a time while hunting, and that the babies would starve to death in this time period.

I immediately had like 5-6 girls begin calling me sexist, and the funny thing is, they are the same women who day-in and day-out spend the entire class period slandering men. When is this non-sense going to stop? I'm getting really sick and tired of women thinking it is okay for them to hate men, and labeling any male who disagrees with them as a sexist. :-(

Most of them will grow out of it.

Don't generalise. Not everyone thinks like that. Also it goes both ways.

First of all, 10 months pregnant? You do realize that it's nine months, not ten? Unless they're late past their due date of birth.

Secondly, like Felfury say... most of them will grow out of it. It's during college time that women act like they are all about "women power" when in reality, they won't be always like this in real life world.

I think alot of people (both men and women) make the mistake of thinking that being treated equally is the same thing as being equal. The arguments you pointed out are perfectly fine, and only indicate difference in physiology between men and women As for the reaction of the rest of the class... stupid people are stupid, regardless of sex

Oh those persons. It would be really really easy to annoy the crap out of them and I´d really enjoy it.

Extremist feminists are really stupid and ignorant. They think females should get more by surpressing males and everything males say about females (whether it is or isn`t negative) is sexist while females can say anything sexist about males without it being seen as sexist. (Note that I`m not talking about all feminists, as some are really about equal rights and not the females-are-better-bullcrap)

Something about pots and kettles spring to mind after reading that...

But ignoring your hypocrisy for now: sexist twats are not unique to one gender and they give us all a bad name. As in all aspects of society, it tends to be the vocal minority which colours peoples general opinions of a group.

They only see things from their point of view. You don't hear about women raping men or spousal abuse when it's the woman abusing the man much do you? If i was you I wouldn't volunteer much as all it will accomplish is them becoming more vocal about it.

Just slap them around a little.

But seriously, lots of people (especially young people) like to play the victim card as an excuse for why they aren't rich or powerful or whatever. That isn't to say that some don't have a point, but a majority of them are just making excuses.

As to you personal experience, from what you have posted, it is because they are too lazy or ignorant to think that they might be sexist. I would put money down that if your class was split much more evenly between the sexes the bitching from those women would never have become so blatant.

I suggest you look up just who really were the hunter/gatherers in that kind of society (hint: both sexes did both roles. Shocking I know) Get well documented proof (not from Wikipedia, but you can use their links as a starting point) and go throw it in your teachers face, in front of all your classmates. Then tell them that women were oppressed because they are literally the weaker sex. Not mentally, not emotionally, but physically. Then tell them that all their whining about how terrible men are is just that, annoying whining. If they actually had a problem with it they would go do something about it. Join a womans rights organization. Take a stand. Something, instead of just sitting in a class with ineffectual whining day in and day out about how 'the man' is keeping them down because they refuse to do anything about it.

    I am a hardcore feminist, anti-sexism person.

What these women do and say here, is not okay nor is it reality. And I'd also like for you to NOT generalize women still. There are idiots everywhere, both women and men.
Sadly these women in your class are not really helping the equality cause at all.

Sexism goes both ways and neither way is okay. Thats why we, the men and women with SENSE in our heads, have to stick together and squash the actual sexism out there, and not listen to some morons who think their gender is the superior one.

After many generations of suppression, I think I should be able to potshot now and then.

Just ignore it or laugh it off, or if you really feel it, argue your case. Point out how hypocritical they are and see what they say. Nobody like that is worth taking seriously, though. As always, the loud minority, the negative voices, are the loudest. Behind them are the majority, the quiet girls who are quite content with the idea of men and women being equal, with no sense of special entitlement and no bias against men at all. But, to be fair, this goes both ways. There are some real pigs out there who give men a bad name. Any girl with common sense should know better than to use it as a stereotype, but you will never convince them otherwise. Just let them rant and move on, or rant back at them if the mood strikes.

I wish your topic was entitled something more like "are these bitches in my class crazy?"
To which after reading that, I would certainly agree with you, wholeheartedly. But I can't really agree with your topic name

It's populair these days to attempt and silence 'opposition' by method of embarrassment and shame. I.E. cite rape cases and so forth to provide shock, so that the natural state of unpleasantness stops others from arguing with you. Don't respond emotionally to it. It's okay to feel emotionally unpleasant, just don't act upon it. Or in this case, don't don't act upon it. Just point out their logical fallacy and explain politely how it is a fallacy and how it doesn't reflect on the actuality of reality. If they'll call you sexist due to that, simply explain how that is a false statement using the clear cut definition that's used in law. If they continue to think you're a sexist... just shrug it off. No need to get worked up.

For up here ^: pregnancy is generally seen as lasting roughly 9 months, while technically it lasts 10 months (40 weeks +/-). It's more popular to count from the last period had before conception. Which brings it to 9 1/2 months, which is rounded down to 9 months.

It's actually 10 months. 40 weeks = 10 months. I found this out because when I was going through the process of becoming a Paramedic the only question I got wrong was checking that pregnancy lasted for 9 months (the answer was 40 weeks). All of the women in the class room shook their head at me like everyone knew that. Most guys don't. :-\

sorry but I have to say something after reading this. When were you personally oppressed? I'm pretty sure the snooty girls in his class weren't oppressed either. I'm not really sure if you were serious, but I have heard this excuse before and not just from women.

Oh so you personally lived through many generations of oppression? That sucks.

52 weeks in a year, divide by 12 months, you have 4.33 (repeating) weeks a month. 4.33 * 9 = 39. Closer to 9 than 10. Especially since most women don't know the first week or so. But hey, maybe I'm just a guy and I don't know the secrets of women.

Stupid, generalizing topic is stupid. You're in a class with what, 15-20 other people and that gives you an insight on how women think?

If everyone who visits these forums made some nonsensical topic like this every time they overheard some person say something, MMO would break.

For instance yesterday I overheard a friend (black woman that I've known for a couple of years) say that she liked cupcakes more than other hostess snacks. Should I make a topic that says, "Why do black people only eat cupcakes?"

That pretty much approximates how dumb topics like this one are.

most people generalize a month as 4 weeks.
also just because you don't know the first week or so doesn't mean you're not pregnant during that time ~_~

@op, college is a place where people like to be very vocal about things. So you'll run into lots of people like this, on many subjects, if you haven't already.
