    24 hours without internet

So I was happily surfing the web when all of a sudden my internet crapped out today. Well no problem, just go downstairs, reset modem and done. Only that didn't work. So I switched on the T.V. to see if the service channel said anything about it........blue screen, no connection. With a sinking feeling I picked up the phone only to find out there was no tone....cut off as well.

Stunned and confused I wandered into the street to tell random passersby of my terrible plight when I noticed a big hole in the ground at my neighbours house with 2 men with spades standing next to it that gave me a rather worried and guilty look.

So these 2 builders had inadvertently cut through our entire cable and we're really sorry about it, but that of course does not help 1 iota when you are without internet unless something is done. So I called my cable company and to my horror they explained that they had no available technicians and that the earliest they could help me was in the afternoon of the next day.

    Noooooooo!

Distraught I turned my mind to the horror that was going to be 24 hours without internet. No WoW, no Diablo 3, no forums, no comics, no way to download anything to occupy my mind, nothing. Didn't help that it's a terrible day with lots of rain here, so spending some time outside in the garden was out too.

I was just starting to calm down and get my head straight and focus on making plans how I was going to spend the next 24 hours when the builders from next door came by to tell me they had bought 2 connectors and had hooked my shit up again.

Glorious relief flooded me then, but the shock has still to wear off and the topic kept bugging me: What on earth would I have done for 24 hours without internet?

The first thing that came to my mind was to listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry, cause I have those on my old hard drive still and it's been a while since I listened to them.

TL;DR: What would you do if disaster struck and you were without internet for 24 hours?

A fairly well know tech writer has gone off the internet for the year, it's a mildly interesting story: http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/30/29...thout-internet

OT: I have emergency books to alleviate boredom in case of catastrophic communications failure.

This is why I keep an anime series or two downloaded at all times.
I would just continue watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and if I run out of episodes, continue with Yosuga no Sora.
If after I have finished those the internet connection is still not up, I continue reading manga and light novels.

Everytime I've moved house I've been at least 24 hours without interenet, often a week/2 weeks. I have games I can play offline, books to read, DVD's to watch and a mobile phone. It's fine to go without internet for a while.

It can get a little boring and you start to feel cut off from certain communities you like to get involved in/pages you follow, but one can survive.

Wait 24 hours and then complain about how Diablo III can't be played single player.

    Dumbest Thread 2012

I was without internet for about 4 months last year (I live in the middle of no where and was trying to find a way to get a connection for less then $80 a month, eventually I gave in =/)
TV, books, and offline games worked to fill time I had at home alone... I really don't like how playing games offline isn't an option or is difficult to set up for new games, it would have made life even more annoying then.

my net was out for 72hours last week. I was so bored at home going insane as I don't watch TV or even own one.. I just mucked about on MS paint and solitaire lol
I don't spend hours on end at home but without internet I hate being at home with nothing to do but sleep!
(on the other hand I cleared out most of the muck on my PC built up over time and listened to some good music stored that I never get round to listening to)

Yeah... I had no internet for about 3 months myself. first 3 weeks were fine. Then I made the terrible mistake to relocate my computer to my TV again (no internet = no TV) and theeen.... Steam no longer worked so I lost nearly every game I play except dragon age 2, and thats super boring after so many play throughs. So then I resorted to just reading, and I do love reading but its still terrible on my mind when its all you can do, especially after playing Video Games your whole life.

You know, people used to do things like go hiking and camping and they would not be connected at all. Nowadays they expect to do those things and still have cellphones and tablets keep them connected.

The idea of being out and unreachable is really becoming like suggesting that someone go without oxygen. It's pretty sad.

Which is the exact reason I refuse to buy a cellphone. Not going to hook myself up to the internet like everyone else.

My gf forgot to pay the internet bill this past Saturday. We have Vonage so our phone is based off the internet so she couldn't call me and I couldn't call her(she had work). I was kinda frustrated at first, but then I just accepted that I'd be without internet and *gasp* played games that don't require internet. You don't have any of those OP? Not even a console with a nice single player game?

I'd give you an inch, you'd take me a mile, your tail wagging happily all the while.
