Art is subjective, but a good degree of modern art pisses me off and crap like that is why. It reminds me of the story where a guy got famous selling his abstract pieces. Turns out he was doing it as an experiment in literally trolling the community by having his cat walking painted paws on his canvases and calling it high art. As an artist who took time to study the fundamentals, I firmly believe that you have to know the rules before you break them and quite a few artists (not saying this particular exhibit, but in general) just throw a bunch of random shit together for the sake of shock value.
The one thing that made my blood boil the most was going to an art museum and seeing a PLAIN BLUE CANVAS on display in the same fucking ROOM as Van Gogh's Starry Night. I imagine it was done by Billy, Age 5. Seriously, what the hell.
If you don't see it you won't get it. As the poster above said, art is subjective - what you see as nothing is a thousand things to another. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean others don't.
If a feeling can be transpired through what someone has done, it's art. 3 graves and a poster saying the war is over, is art. In all honesty, I like things like this. Maybe not so much the dirt, but yeah.
To me art is just another way to express one's self (similar to music, literature etc..), and it's not just the pile of dirt that's in exhibition there are other stuff as well as you scroll down.
I have seen far more less impressing pieces of "art". This will do.
I like it too. The beauty of art is that everyone sees something slightly different based upon the different expectations an experiences. What makes one laugh can make one cry. What makes one want to dance can make another want to die. I personally see maybe a dozen things in those 3 piles of dirt, all invoking different emotions and draw upon different parts of me.
Just because you don't like it doesn't make it not art.
Of course it's art.
"The answer is always more art; the corollary to that is the answer is never less art. If you start to think that less art is the answer, start over. That’s not the side you want to be on."

So, yes, and why the hell isn't it?
its Yoko Fucking Ono,
the only reason that anyone would consider this art, or give her money for this is because of who she is (a saggy old broad who happened to be married to one of the greatest song writers of all time)
Had I, or any other normal person decided to place 3 piles of dirt and poster in a room, hung some helmets from fishing line and filled it with old jigsaw pieces or had pictures of a Murdered partner on a screen (going for the sympathy vote here and really scrapping the barrel in regards to taste) and called it art, we would be laughed at and told where to go.
However its Yoko ono and people worship the ground she walks on due to her marriage to John Lennon
is it art ? in my opinion no. its simply some old hag cashing in on her name and previous associations for a bit of extra publicity and or money.
Thats dirt. dirt is not art. maybe if it was a dirt sculpture or at least a dirt cube. but just a pile of dirt? only to moronic people its art.
This is no flying cat helicopter! What a pile of shit.
I don't really care. As long as someone gets something out of it, good for them.
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
The key to being an artist is to realize the viewers will see what they want to see.
All you have to do is give them something to look at.
ITT: People thinking they can add a direct definition to what art actually is or isn't.
