What the hell are we expecting from optimization?

Is it this magical thing that will fix all performance problems with the game? I don't understand.

    I have no performance issues. I haven't since BWE1.

Optimization will improve fps, latency, and a lot of minor performance issues for a variety of different people and their computers to varying degrees... that's about it. I don't know what else anyone would expect...

The only real optimization problems left are those associated with specific builds. Your basic CPU+1 GPU builds do fine.

I've played this game on three different graphics cards and they all ran it flawlessly. One was lowest, one was mid range, and the most recent was highest. I would say optimization is very good for 85-90% of players.

^This. Please don't use words like 'we' cause I don't think hardly any of us are having performance issues. The BWE's have been smooth as can be. I've actually never played a beta so well polished before. And I played swtor beta, rift, champions online, warhammer online,, age of conan all there betas. None is as slick as GW2.

Oh I think you understand just perfectly....

Get a better PC or better skills...there are no performance issues really other than the performer.

Optimization will help FPS on rigs that should have higher FPS, but won't magically make the game run like butter on 8 year old budget laptops.

WvW with about 30 people on screen = fine fps for me

Random spot on 2nd norn area with barely anything at all on screen = sudden drop on fps making it really annoying

yeah, there are problems, really weird ones.

Water reflections and shadows really drop the performance more than they should.
    With a i5 2500 and GTX 560Ti, there isn't a lot of upgrade room.

BWE2 I had zero problems, BWE1 I had lagg problems in WvW because of the amount of people however that is expected in any game that does this.

BWE3 the only problem I had was the skill lagg that lasted half the day on saturday, I'm guessing it was a server issue because everyone had it they wouldn't shut up about it in map chat....

I received a day one ORAS demo code. I am a chosen one.

For me, the game was more than optimized enough, running completely fluid at 1920x1080 on max settings, which is far more than I can say of any MMORPG with comparable graphics. That said, people can have genuine problems if the game simply doesn't agree with their card or drivers.

Of course there are also some people who expect their 5 year old PC to run a 2012 game at 60-100 fps on max settings, in which case they're fools.

Agreed that the first benefit of optimization and final code-locking will be to enable the SLIs, etc.
However, considering that in BWE3 I still saw a number of graphics "chrome" features that were either not enabled or only minimally-enabled, I think even CPU+GPU setups will see the potential of both significant graphical and performance improvement. (Whether they offset is of course something we'll see... ha ha). Graphics settings will allow higher FSAA, more multitextures, as well as other fancy bits (are they bumpmapping?); pulling the rendering code OUT of the CPU and handing it to the GPU should allow SIGNIFICANT frame improvement, as well as (I'm guessing) resolve remaining z-fighting and other niggling things that GPUs are really optimized for.

I only experienced minor lags during stress tests, which is quite normal. Other than that I had smooth experience on medium and ultra settings since BWE1.

As many others have said, there are problems with specific builds. I have a midrange to low end computer and I ran BWE 2 and 3 flawlessly. TotalBiscuit has been commenting on low performance from his computer but he has an absolute monster setup. Optimization for more machines will probably continue for the next month and after launch, but don't be surprised if 90% of the players run the game flawlessly right now.

    Didint have any major problem
U can play other games , and try GW2 on November if u are afraid they wont fix all performance problems till the end of August

I'm expecting(or hoping) that optimization will let me run game with lowest settings.

ps: I didn't play it. Maybe it can run with current state of game.

    Had no issue on an i5-750 and 5870 @ 1920x1200, and none on Phenom II X4 965 with 5850 @ 1280x1024.

If you're just turning up graphics options for the hell of it, you deserve to have your game running slowly.
