Concerned about which server to play on.

I seem to have the worst luck when I pick my server in MMO's. It always seems to be the one that becomes a ghost town first or is so over populated that I always have to wait in queue for hours at a time.

Usually I've noticed you can kind of tell which servers are going to be overpopulated from the start based on beta and forums. Any idea how I can go about researching which server to play on without getting screwed to boot and having to buy a transfer?

There are no queues in GW2.
You end up on overflow server if something.
However I noticed overflow server doesnt give you any buffs from WvWvW bonuses from your own server - something to be fixed to have it perfect :P

Your home server only affects WvWvW play, and the minor world benefits they give your server if it is holding strong and dominating your current WvWvW battle in the mists.

Otherwise there is absolutely no worry about which server you play on or choose. You can guest on any other server (regionwide or worldwide i'm still not certain) during your play so you aren't server locked like in other MMOs. The auction house economy is regionwide/worldwide as well so you wont have to worry about a weak AH due to underpopulated servers like in other MMO's.

Essentially other than choosing a home server for WvWvW dominance in PvP there are no real drawbacks to which server you choose.

ahum, actually the north-western country's of europe often share the same playstyles and mentality compared to the south-/eastern europe. It's just that the germans often play on german servers Holland and Belgium being small country's often adept and join up with the larger country's

The only time overpopulation of a server will be an issue is for geting into WvW. That is the only place that has a hard population cap per server. Any other time if you try to go to an over crowded area you get shunted off to an overflow version of that area till room clears up. you can do all the same things in overflow as in normal and your friends can join you in the overflow if they wish. And as others said you can guest yourself to any other server you want at any time so even a ghost town server is a very minor concern. basicly your server choice is little more than picking your WvW team, everywhere else the lines that make up a traditional MMO server are rather blurry.

I'll just make sure not to join the servers where the memespouting Reddit and 4chan's /v/ hang out. I'll also try to avoid unofficial Dutch servers, because I've had bad experiences in past MMOs with Dutch people. (No offence, just personal experience)

One time I was playing with my friend and he got d/c'd came back and we had trouble finding eachother even though on the map it said we were right next to eachother, I assume he must've got put into the overflow.

Happened to my husband I was running with, right click on your friends portrait in party (I was in party at the time) and select move to him or move to his server (something like that) and youll be moved to his overflow and than be able to see interact with him.
