Guild Wars 2 just doesn't look right. :S

I am a huge supporter of Guild Wars 2 and I think it's better than the current incarnation of WoW in almost every way. However, I just can't get past how weird and unnatural the game looks. The character models look like they are pasted onto the environment or just projected on there. They don't look like a fluid part of the environment at all. The background is beautiful, then you just have these characters plopped there that look out of place.

Another thing that bothers me is the highlight halo that surrounds a character when you click it. I think this form of highlighting is awkward and makes the above issue even worse. It's like the characters are even more out of place when clicked on. Also the animations are really choppy, it's not very fluid if I'm to be honest. It doesn't really affect the gameplay in any way, but just makes the game look less polished. Lastly, the characters look really bad compared to the background/environment. They look like they are more complex stickfigures. They are not anywhere near as round, natural or lifelike as I would want them to be. They are just a lot less pleasing to look at than some other MMOs. WoW graphics are way shittier, but the artwork is honestly miles better.

Guild Wars 2 has great graphics and looks awesome, but their artwork style is lacking in a major way. The characters look awkward and move awkwardly. This has no major effect on the gameplay, but it makes the game less desirable to look at. It is essentially a very shallow point that has nothing to do with gameplay, but I think if the GW2 team had spent as much time on the looks/artwork of the game as they have on the content & mechanics, then it would have even been more successful. You want to be amazed when you look at a new game, and besides some very epic looking bosses, GW2 doesn't LOOK that great.

At least the game is far ahead of the compeition gameplay/mechanics wise.....

I do apologise... but artwork style (so aesthetics) are kinda... personal taste.
I really like the art style of it.

Also just of note your post is KINDA game comparison, which is against forum rules. =)

I completely agree. GW2 has so much working for it, yet the sleekness of the game play and graphics is lacking. As a WoW player I know that GW2 addresses many flaws for us MMO players but I still feel WoW's movement and gameplay flows better.

I don't know if you have been running on a really old rig to play the beta weekends or if it's just because beta will be beta and it's not representative of the final product but I have had no problems with the artwork in the environment or on the characters. Every time I have played during stress tests and weekends I played a game that may have had a few bugs or an animation issue here or there but otherwise looked really polished.

But then again, it is my opinion and beta is beta.

I kinda agree with you. I wasn't sure what about this game turned me off to it so damn fast - but maybe at a subconscious level i didn't like the looks of the game. I blamed the gameplay and movement. That, or tapping a button/key to get back up after death... i cannot say ugh enough.
No flames for this fire, as always everything I say is IMO only.

I honestly don't see the purpose of this thread. You don't like the art style, that's naturally ok, everyone has their preferences but what's the point of this thread? There isn't anything to discuss.

Anyone that disagrees with the OP will be called a fanboy
Anyone that agrees with the OP will be called a hater

So lets call this a lump on our ass and leave it alone, eh?

I'm sorry but I haven't noticed anything about the game flow. It is quite smooth. It's different cause it has different mechanics than WoW does, that's something that we'll have to get used to. But I honestly don't feel like anything is out of place. Anet has done a good job at polishing the game, as far as I'm concerned.

And OP: the character highlight? It's the same as in WoW except for more, texture, I guess?

I kinda agree, at first sight it really looks amazing, but after a while things like avatars looking out of place start to annoy me a little bit too. Of course animations and movement are not nearly as smooth and sleek and snappy as I would have liked them to be either. In any case I can't freaking wait to start playing already

Exactly my thoughts. I was amazed how great the beta experience already was. At first I needed some minutes to acclimate myself to the game. It looked a bit awkward at the beginning. But then, after I knew what was cracking and what I had to do, it started to look like very nice. It just fit together.

I really like the visual part of GW 2. Esp. since it's not comic themed. I am tired of comic graphic.

haha I talked about graphics the other day in another thread so Im just gonna repost it here, (yes because Im lazzyy)

Here are 2 nice videos showing of the life in tyria, you can tell that almost if not everything is handcrafted and I yet have to see any copy paste stuff
(wich I do see alot in wow)

To me Gw2 feels more alive, just look at the npc's walking around.. and you feel like the players fit in well to. A player could almost be mistaken to be a npc if they wanted to. Just type /walk (or how you now do that in Gw2 haven't tested it yet haha)
Thing is, WoW isn't ugly but it have a more "cartoony" art style with very distinct lines and colors. Gw2 have a more "romantic" style were the colors are more blending in to each other. So its more of a taste thing really which one you like the most, but you can't assume that everyone thinks the other one is superior in beauty :P
Imo all art styles are beautiful in their own way, if they are done correctly

    Some screenshots/examples would be nice.

Sorry I think what I meant to say was regarding the movement. I guess I'm just too used to WoW's running (a lot faster).

This pretty much sums it up. Saying you don't like the artwork style is like saying you don't like techno, or Picasso's paintings. Thanks for sharing, but it's not really a fault of ArenaNet, techno groups, or Picasso. The real question is, could you be at a party where they play one techno song? Could you visit a museum with Picasso paintings? Could you play a game that doesn't have your ideal artwork style?

Any possibility to watch the video via another platform? GEMA has yet to be taken care off -_-.

The floating annoys me, you never feel attacked to the ground you kind of slide along personally though the graphics are dated but perfectly good for an MMO, do I prefer them to rifts/wows etc not really they are all around the same level. The highlighting thing is pretty off putting as are all the massive particle effects that swamp the screen in big groups but its really a decent looking game.

The original poster consistently creates flamebait threads like this. Please close this thread, it will devolve quickly.

It's missing the absolut lag-free snappy responsiveness of WoW - that's my only problem with GW2. All feels a bit "floaty".
Atoms are liars, they make up everything!

I think everyone would like an MMO with wow's crisp, responsive controls (its only redeeming factor left atm), however, I think that compared to many other MMOs out there GW2 comes the closest.

Moreover, GW2 has some very nice movement improvements, like when you're standing on a stair, you'll see a leg higher on the stairs and one lower, same on cliffs, which I think is a nice touch. Maybe in time they'll make it smoother, but I really can't say it's a game killer for me.

Download the Proxtube addon for firefox or chrome. It will unlock blocked vids.
