Extreme cpu temperatures when running prime 95

    http://i.imgur.com/L24ea.jpg

My heatsink is a frio thermal take fan. /Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106150 put that at the end of a newegg link.

My cpu is an i5 3570k with no overclock.

Both of these were taken from the suggested build lists that Marest made.

I used the default thermal paste that came with the heatsink.

I only ran prime 95 for about 2 minutes before I got scared and turned it off.

I couldn't run Folding at Home either because after about 4 minutes of it running my computer would seize up and the monitor would go grey with a quiet buzzing noise from the speakers and I had to restart my computer to fix.

Holy shit what is going on.

And could somebody fix these links for me, I don't have 10 posts yet obviously.

Did you make sure that its bolted down properly? Have you tried reapplying paste? Is the CPU fan spinning?

Also, if you want people to help, try to be a bit less cryptic and make links easier to get to.

Fans are all spinning at 2500 rpm.

Im not sure how it couldn't be on properly, I've tried to reseat it twice already but I did notice that there was minimal thermal paste left on the heatsink when I took it off. I could take pictures of it if you would like.

Unless I am suppose to tighten the bolts more than just finger tight, in which case I will try that in a minute.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but I can run skyrim at max settings for several hours and never go above ~47 degrees but when do a proper test it always fails.

Are you sure you haven't overclocked it? 3.873 ghz and 103.2 x 37.6 looks like it might have been. If so, do you know what your vcore is at?

It is most likely the HS isnt seated properly, or bad application of paste. Those temps are crazy high. Take a pic of your cpu right after you take off the HS with the paste smudge still there.

I agree, i just figured it'd be best to make sure the voltage isn't set to something ridiculous before he takes his PC apart again.

Im pretty sure, I haven't accidentally overclocked it unless it was already done when I bought it for some reason. the vcore should still be whatever the default value is.

If you're still sure that it might be oc'd for some reason I will go into my bios and check, that is how you find your vcore, right?

The 3.8 is also probably the turbo boost overclock that is automatically applied under load (prime95).

I take it that you haven't been reapplying thermal paste every time you take it off, right? That's your problem right there.

No, I haven't but now that you mention it, that would make sense because airbubbles would form.

How would I go about doing that, I don't have any strong alchol cleaners right now.

The computer is apart right now and im taking pictures of cpu.

I can't seem to get the heatsink to fully contact the cpu like its suppose to though, I can't tighten the bolts at the back enough with only my fingers which seems to be what they were intended for, what I could do though is get a pair of pliers and tighten them a bit more that way, but that seems like I'm still doing it wrong.

Step 1: Scrape off the chewing gum you're trying to use as a thermal compound and buy some Arctic Silver 5. I swear by it as I know most others do as well.
Step 2: Whether you get AS5 or not; the i5 CPU's benefit most from the Vertical Line Application Method found on AS5's website. Read it and be sure to follow those steps for re-applying some paste.
    Step 3: ??????
    Step 4: Profit

And on a side note; just to be safe I'd hop into your BIOS and reset all settings to default.

Don't try using anything to clean up the compound until you get some high concentrate Rubbing / Isopropyl Alcohol (or a thermal compound remover itself)
Be sure to clean off the heatsink as well.
And you should read up on heatsink's installation procedure to make sure you're doing it right

Yeah, unfortunately that's all you can really use. I'd suggest getting some rubbing alcohol at a local drug store, it's really cheap. Alcohol wipes work as well. Just whatever you do, don't use water.

Also, obviously you should cease using the computer to prevent possible damage. But looking at your heatsink, it should have come with its own thermal compound. Did it not?

Put these all at the end of an imgur link.

Is there any proper way to clean off this shit without a strong alcohol based cleaner.

And yeah, its definitely not contacting the cpu properly, 0 paste on the center of the heatsink.

I don't know what I can do about that because it was in as tight and as straight as it could be.

    It did.

I could run skyrim at ultra settings at 45 degrees for hours no problem.

Make sure you installed it correctly; check this video of someone installing a Thermaltake Heatsink.

Hand sanitizer (the stuff that you don't use water with) works as well by the way, kinda forgot about that one, as long as it's alcohol based.

Thats not my heatsink, but when I tried to install it, It would go in as far as possible and I would screw it in, but apparently that isn't enough and it doesn't quite fully contact the cpu.

So I just put a bit of that on a clean rag and wipe it off?

Just a drop or 2 of the sanitizer, do I then wipe off the sanitizer stuff with a second clean rag?

Just get isopropyl, its not expensive (like $2 max for a 16 oz bottle, of which you will use like .01 oz).

Also not sure how you could really have the heatsink on wrong... they generally only go on one way. Did you have it secured properly?

EDIT: You are sure you followed the installation methods for the i5 and not for like some AMD model somehow?
