    Education Blows

As a student of the past 20 or so years I have to say that the education system in the US just sucks donkey balls.

At the moment I am taking engineering courses at a public university.
There are some courses called socio-techinical systems that are required for a degree.

Now I ask you enlightened gentlemen to please explain to me what this,
    http://www.giffordlectures.org/Brows...=0&ArticleID=5

    Has to do with engineering?

This is the most boring pile of bull shit I have ever been forced to read in my entire life!
Its all just BS to feed the corporate machine. A degree that should take 2-3 years, takes 4-5, because you have to waste time on stuff like this.

An education isn't supposed to be a technical program that teaches nothing other than the capacity to do a job. Being stubbornly unwilling to learn about things that aren't in your field of choice isn't really a good thing.

If you're talking about 101 courses, they exist to ensure that everyone attending the classes are participating at the same level of education. Some people had awful science teachers in high school, some might've had terrible English teachers, and some may not have finished high school at all. A professor can't adequately educate a class if he starts talking about stoichiometry and half the class is sitting there with puzzled looks on their faces.

although halfyway through algebra they start teaching you equations and other crap that you will never in a moillionyears use in physics or any practical application they seem to teach repetative crap that has nothing to do with your field so that they can make money at public universities and colleges you dont see private collages or universities teaching that bullshit to there students its quite obvious when you compare education standards just how much time the public collages and public universities waste to make more money for the school

Well, we such things in germany as well.
When i was studying math/physics a decade ago i had to (sucessfully) attend a course where we learned the rank of the women within a family in the chritian 15th century.

Does that help me with math? NO.
Does it help me with physics? Hell NO.

Does it hurt me to know some stuff not job related? Well no.

So yeah i am still undecided about the whole subject, but yeah OP you got a point there

    I fixed the link.

I have to essentially write a 6 page research paper on the garbage.

I would be shocked if you could stomach reading like 3 paragraphs of that dribble without feeling sorry for me.

I don't really see the problem with someone in engineering taking an ethics of technology class. Do you have an actual reason why its irrelevant other than that you don't feel like doing it?

    Two hours my ass...
This isn't some fluff paper you write for your English teacher in High school.

How about you tell where it is relevant, cause I can't think of anything.
Ethics doesn't exist in anything else in this shithole country. If ethics should be taught somewhere, its in business and government.

Perhaps three hours. If it's taking a lot longer than that, you're probably not particularly skilled at writing, since the topic's not terribly difficult. I suppose not everyone's quick with writing, but writing 6 pages is really no big deal. If you think writing six pages is a big deal, then you clearly need the practice and should be glad to have it.

I love how they ask you a 6 page research paper, about a text that hardly fits into 1. Way to ask people to throw shit in there just for the sake of making it large. I always hated these kind of work. For the subject, well, it doesn't really sound any different than the subjects I had to write papers on in highschool... So glad I didn't have to do any of this in college.

This is one of the most petulant, whiny, entitled things I've read, and that's saying something.

I wrote a page of my new paper last week. Just one. In a week. Don't forget it depends on what you're writing.

So you got nothing, you should just say that then.
I think I hear your bell going off for first period.

Don't see what your problem is. "Ethics in an Age of Technology", seems perfectly relevant to engineering to me. It is good to have an well-rounded education beyond pure technical knowledge. One should understand the implications of one's work.

If you can't stomach reading three paragraphs of a simple e-book like this then you might be in for some trouble.

It's a paper for college class. It's not exactly the same as muddling through a data-heavy bit of thesis work.

Isn't great how everyone is an expert at everything on the internet.
Yah, you are just so skilled at writing pointless papers. Damn! What mad skills you must have! Baby Einstein right here!

I don't think I have anything for someone whose taken the attitude you have. If it's hard to figure out why the ethics of technology might be relevant to an engineer, I think your program should probably add a critical thinking class.
