I've been to jail over absolute bullshit. I was thrown in there, and was not given a phone call. When I asked for one the jailers told me to shut the fuck up and they didn't give a damn. However somehow my family managed to find out I was in jail and got me out promptly. I wasn't even in there for 24 hours. When I was in there for that short amount of time it was already starting to drive me crazy.
Well if you requested a phone call and didn't get one, then you could have had the ACLU sue them for you. And I don't really care if you didn't like being put in jail. You're not supposed to. If a police officer tells you to sign a ticket, you sign the ticket and either pay the fine or contest it in court. If you refuse to sign the ticket, prepare to spend a couple nights in lockup. It's pretty simple.

I feel bad for the family, but I honestly believe they are going to be in for a big shock (or more denial) when/if they find out this was do to him being a coke head.
I've lost count of the number of times the cops have brought someone into my ER because they were arrested for one thing...even something minor, but started to go through withdrawals during the processing portion, and have to be taken to the hospital because of the physical/mental issues that come with not getting a fix. High fever, out of their minds, stripping off all their clothes (or attempting to while cuffed), hallucinations, etc. If he mentions killing himself or hurting others during that delusional state then they can (and will) slap him with a 72 hold for observation. So his 48 hour stint now becomes 5 days which is how long they are saying he was stuck in the jail.
I usually take a very 'watchdog' approach to the police but I honestly think they are doing the family a big favor by not releasing information at this point.
EDIT: Also, you're an idiot if you are skateboarding anywhere around the train stations here in So.Cal. Anyone who boards knows that those platform cops are just waiting to ticket you if you have a skateboard with you.

Sounds like he was either tripping his balls off, or he was out of his mind due to cold turkey.
The declining state of prisons over there is more like "prepare to die if you refuse to pay the fine" because people are continually excusing human rights violations as they paint people who break the law as scum who don't deserve any basic human rights.
Whether the story in the OP is another example of this or just something totally unrelated and self-inflicted remains to be seen, but we can see that if it were down to the prisons treatment of him people are fine with it and come up with reasons to justify that view. It makes me sick to think people think like that in this day and age, especially when they come from a decent country that isn't Somalia or Afghanistan.

You don't get put in prison for this sort of thing. You might go to the county jail, which is nowhere near the conditions you're talking about. I don't even think they have solitary cells in county jails. This was a totally appropriate response to a guy who was refusing to comply with a police officer.

Holy shit I'm cracking up. I had no idea what the hell he meant until you pointed it out, thank you.
Anyway, all this could have been avoided if he just signed the fucking ticket. He broke the law and was unwilling to face the consequences, and therefore he was arrested. I see no issue with this. People in this thread are making some pretty fucking wild assumptions (no phone call, solitary), but for all we know, that kid's stay in jail was as normal as anyone else's. His arrest and death are probably unrelated anyway.
One question I have, is why the hell did his family just leave the house while he was naked and whacked out of his mind. Obviously there was something wrong with him, probably not the best idea to let him go off on his own.

This is incorrect. They are required to give you a phone call. How many phone calls depends on the law of the state and local authority.
Q: What should I do if law enforcement officers arrest me?
A: The officer must advise you of your constitutional rights to
remain silent, to an attorney, and to have an attorney appointed if you cannot afford one. You should exercise all these
rights, even if the officers don’t tell you about them. Do not tell the police anything except your name. Anything else you say can and will
be used against you. Ask to see a lawyer immediately. Within a reasonable amount of time after your arrest or booking you have the right to a
phone call. Law enforcement officers may not listen to a call you make
to your lawyer, but they can listen to calls you make to other people. You
must be taken before a judge as soon as possible—generally within 48
hours of your arrest at the latest. (See Section IV for information about
arrests for noncriminal immigration violations.)

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.
