How do you feel about fireworks?

Having just dealt with an upset child and a terrified dog after someone in my area decided to set off a series of unusually loud fireworks on an unimportant day in July I began to wonder about other people's attitude to fireworks.

Personally I really dislike them. I tolerate them on days of note, bonfire night in the UK and New Years. Although on these days I have a hell of a time caring for my dog who is terrified of the banging and the whole night will run around the house crying, howling and barking.

Tonight, being the 27th July I don't see why anyone would have a reason to be setting off fireworks. I also consider it really inconsiderate to do so. It's night time, it's common knowledge it affects animals, wakes up children and scares pensioners as well as annoying a lot of people in a several mile radius.

Sure they look pretty, but is it really worth causing all that distress so that a couple of people can stare up and watch gunpowder explode?

I'm not even going to get into the dangers of them, especially when being handled by members of the public and I would support any legislation that banned the sale of fireworks to the general public and permission was only granted to organised events.

Call me a spoil sport and a kill joy, I just personally don't see how the attractiveness of them out ways all the negatives.

So I ask you, what is your opinion of fireworks?
    Do you like/dislike them?
Should their use be limited to certain times of the year?
How do you feel about anyone having access to them?

Who doesn't like explosions with bright colours?!

I only currently hate them because my dog starts to bark when he hears them. Other than that I don't mind them.

I like them, but it doesn't mean I want to hear them and see them every night. They should be used on occasion.

Loved them during my childhood, don't care much for them now, I guess they're cool for setting a mood to the evening.

I like the big traditional ones, but I don't really like "do-it-yourself fireworks" they're illegal here because of oak trees anyways.

As a child, I saw the night skies of Iraq on the news, being bombarded.

Ever since, I've really hated fireworks.

Fireworks are nice, but the explosions can be just annoying. Alot of fireworks in the UK intentionally make an excessive bang.

I know someone who works for a major firework company and they make every effort they can to make the explosions as loud as possible. They've even gotten in trouble for generating dangerous levels of shockwaves in the past.

don't mind them. a bit annoying when someone starts doing them at like midnight on a wednesday. but they never annoy me too much.

my dog never minded fireworks, or loud noises at all really, he grew up next to an airbase, he was use to stupidly loud noises.

I like the ones the cities put on, and sparklers are fine, but when the yahoos next door think its ok to use fireworks that end up in my yard or on my roof is when I have a problem. ESPECIALLY when they use them regardless of a burn ban.

Not to mention the people that use them on July 5,6,and 7 as well as January 2 and 3rd.

I enjoy using and view fireworks. The problem is idiots who refuse to respect the danger of them and endanger themselves and others.

I'm fine with them on certain holidays and in remote areas, but if I heard them at night and it was bothering me, I'd locate the source and call the police.

I can see some negative connection to them if you have dogs that can't handle loud noises and a sleeping baby that wakes up. However other than that I don't feel fireworks is even worth buying. Oh you get to see some colors in the sky, you can spend money on something better. Like an entry fee to some theme park and the likes and take the family and have fun instead of spending a few minutes seeing your money blow up in the sky.

The big, pretty stuff I like, but outside the expected holidays, eh... kind of annoying when done at random. The pretty stuff would probably be a momentary surprise and ok, esp since it prob would not be many, but those aren't what people are usually setting off outside holidays. Screaming bottle rockets or whatever 10 o' clock at night on other dates far off from the 4th or Jan. 1st... grrr.

As far as the 4th goes, personally I'm mildly amused that it's such a collective day to break the law since they're illegal where I am (so technically the limit is supposed to be always!) and yet there's usually a fair amount of noise around where I am. Though it was surprising that the weekend just days after were rather quiet, which was unexpected...people must have used up their stuff the first night. lol

I can understand the pet thing though. The dog we used to have would go into the basement and try to dig a hole in the corner in a concrete floor. And an indoor/outdoor cat once didn't come home the night of the 4th, probably holed up somewhere until it felt safe at some point the next day. Oddly though our current oldest cat for years used to hang out on our enclosed porch and watch the little bit we used to set off, never bothered her at all...I guess you just never know with animals. o.O

They're fine on the specific holidays where people accept them.

But other than that, they're just a nuisance.

    They're fine unless it's a burn ban.

Well in Denmark we are only allowed to use fireworks a few days before and after december 31 ... rest of the year its a no-go unless you get a permit for a party or somthing like a town fair etc.

Personaly i like a good round of fireworks but i do suport it being out of the way of animals and small kids.

Edit ...... Oh yeah and also we are not allowed anything that goes bang louder then a a medium fart.

I don't mind them, they really aren't a big deal. The town next to mine has fireworks every Friday night during baseball season, just kind of get used to it, they aren't that annoying or bad though even though I can hear them from a couple miles away. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch them by any means, but the noise has little to no impact on my life at all.
