Dude Alpha and then Beta means start of public (out of house) test, its been always like this and its like this now. Its going out of house, so its alpha. Cata/Wotlk/WoD all same. It could be very much ready or not, its just when it goes public or out of house, its called alpha(more special ppl) or beta(wider range of random ppl).

As stated by Simca, HotS' alpha isn't internal. They could have called it "early beta" and people wouldn't have raged as much.

If you care to read a few posts above, this "alpha" is a pre-beta test for the new file system. Once they confirm it works, it'll be an official beta.

Im honestly not concerned about SoO lasting over a year, and only being in beta. Imo, with the new tech changes, and team restructuring, having beta this late was necessary. This will be the last expansion that lasts a long time. The team is not in position with the tech needed for faster updates. Just guessing.
