Question Parents fined for letting daughter have sex

A teenager’s parents have been fined €3,000 by a court in Bavaria for not stopping their 13-year-old daughter having sex with her boyfriend.

The girl was 13 when she slept with her 16-year-old boyfriend and had talked about it with her parents beforehand.

Her parents told the court in Viechtach, Bavaria, on Monday that they had tried to talk her out of it but could not convince her.

The girl met the boy at a party in 2011. Six months later, when she was 13 and he was 16, she told her mother she wanted to have sex with him, the Passauer Neue Presse reported on Tuesday.

Unable to convince her otherwise, the mother said she took her daughter to a gynecologist who prescribed her the pill.

The mother said she was unaware that sex under the age of consent, which is 14 in Germany, was a criminal offence. “You can’t stop hormones,” she said.

Two-and-a-half years later the court fined the parents €3,000 which the judge described as a “fair offer”. The parents avoided a criminal record.

A spokeswoman for the local prosecutor's office said they had never come across a similar case.

"They [the parents] were only prosecuted because they knew what their daughter was doing and it was brought to our attention," she told The Local. "We had no choice but to prosecute once we knew."

The Passauer Neue Presse reported that the case only came to light when the boyfriend appeared in court over a separate matter.

Should the parents really be blamed for this?

Not at all blaming the parents is ridiculous and unnecessary. Having there even being blame given for 2 teens having sex is insane.

Parents are responsible for their children the kid told them, they should have told her to wait. Honestly it's shitty parenting all around who lets their 13 year old have sex.

Well they should be blamed for letting their kid have sex if it had any negative affects, but I think criminalizing it is silly. I like their "hormones" defense, honestly.

A lame reason to fine someone 3000 Euros but ignorance doesn't make it ok.

At least they took her to get birth control rather than just letting her go nuts. Should give them a medal instead.

The said they talked to her about it and that. You can't really stop 2 people from having sex when they want to unless you sorta imprison them and escort them to and from school

God damn that's bureaucracy for you eh. Whilst I don't agree with the daughter having sex her parents were actually sensible and responsible about the whole matter. She was going to have sex with or without their permission and they ensured that precautions were taken. The fact their daughter came to them about such an issue clearly shows the maturity of her relationship with her parents and they should be proud to have raised a daughter who actually comes to them with important and delicate issues.

A great example of what good sex education results in, as opposed to kids who won't approach their parents and wont use contraception because they are either embarrassed or incapable of obtaining it.

I think the parents did the reasonable and harder thing, getting their daughter on the pill and accepting that their little girl wasn't really a "girl" anymore.

Whom I think let them down here was actually the doctor as I think most health services should be more up on the age of consent over say a parent who's been out of the dating game for over a decade.

All that said I can see how the case went down and think the fine was reasonable, if annoyingly high.

Here's some news for you. That thirteen year old would have had sex with or without her parents permission.

Well if the mother said "NO daughter, no you cannot have sex!!" Do you really think that she wouldn't have sex with her boyfriend anyway? It's stupid to think that you can stop someone for haveing sex. The mother knew this and gave her birthcontrol pills.

They did tell her to wait. But at the end of the day there's no way they could have prevented it... just what do you expect them to have done, imprison her in the house until she was old enough?

Thats the thing about being a parent, you have those options. The kid came to them asked them about it they should have done more than said oh well hormones can't be stopped. It's called parenting you inform your kid whats best and sometimes you have to be the bad guy to prevent them from doing something that is not in their best interest.

Clearly they should have installed a stainless steel chastity belt instead of taking her to the gyno.

Didn't the gynecologist who prescribed the pill get anything? One would think a genitalia-doctor would know what the age of consent is, and inform the parents just in case they don't.

If the age of consent was 14 wouldn't the boy be in trouble too?

I'm not sure when parents lost the ability to control their children?

Shouldn't the "boyfriend" be fined ? I mean... he's the one who had sex with an underaged girl...

Looks like their daughter sure picked a winner.
