What's the scariest unexplained thing that has ever happened to you?

It was summer of 2012, and we were on vacation. I was in California at the time with him since I had just graduated high school in L.A., and he (since he was a two years older than me) had just gotten off duty for two weeks from the Marine Corps. Anyways, we decided to head up to Colorado to his parents house, but something very, very chilling happened on his way to his parents' house. As we were driving down the interstate, it was largely uneventful for ~3 hours, but all of that changed when we finally crossed into Colorado. The entire area that the interstate passed through was fairly densely wooded, which was a contrast from the barren landscape of the state of Arizona that we had just passed through.

Anyways, as we were ~90 miles from Denver, my friend decided that he would take a backroute that connected to the Nevada-Utah-Colorado interstate since that would've saved us some time as his parents' house was on the northern edge of Denver. About 15 minutes after he did this, we eventually came across a car that was parked horizontally across the road. It was a beat-up Subaru. Keep in mind that it was fairly dark outside at this point and that this backroute had had no cars for most of the 15 minutes that had passed. It was also densely wooded with old trees, which reduced visibility in both lateral directions. As we got closer, the headlights of the car began to make out two people lying face down on the road. One of the car doors was still open, and there was an open suitcase on the other side of the car.

I was already beginning to feel really uneasy. The two people looked dead, but it didn't look like a car accident. I began to immediately cycle through scenarios, such as a serial killer or worse, but none made sense at at the time. There's no feeling like knowing you're in severe danger, but knowing what you're in danger of, exactly. The adrenaline has you shivering uncontrollably.

Him, being a U.S. Marine who had seen combat in Iraq, reached into the dashboard, and got his .9 mm service standard out like it was no big deal at all. He loaded the chamber, and braced for combat. At this point, I knew that if he was feeling the strangeness of this situation, too, it must've been serious. Something was obviously very, very wrong. The entire scene was looking "too perfect" to be real, which had just set us on edge even more. Well, turns out that our intuitions were correct. We kind of thought thought about getting out of the car, but decided not to since it was too dark and he would be in an unfavorable tactical position. We decided we'd just try to drive around it, and so he managed to finally get around the road block by partially dipping into the ditch on the side of the road.

And that's when it began. We got past the road block, and as soon as we did this, the two figures instantly got up. Furthermore, ~20 other people began to swarm from the woods. When the first person jumped up onto the road from a ditch, I seriously thought it was a Were-wolf. Your rational thinking ability is drowned by the panicked adrenaline that courses through your blood vessels. Some of them were in hooded robes, kind of like the KKK, but without the pointy dunce caps. At this point, he lowered the window, discharged two rounds somewhere to the side of the car and somewhere in front, and then floored the car. We managed to get away from the swarm JUST in time, and drove like hell to the interstate.

We filed a police report, but nothing was found the next day. To this day, we still speculate that it could've been cultists or maybe something even more sinister, but ultimately, we don't know.

Sometimes, real life is scarier than any movie. And this wasn't even the last time this happened to me, since something eerily reminiscent of this happened to my girlfriend and I a year later (although it was a bit less dramatic since we just turned around and drove the hell away.)

Nothing of the sort ever happened to me. Which is a bit disappointing, would love to experience some unexplained event.

(I'm a skeptic, in case you're wondering. Don't believe in anything of the sort)

Well that's... wow. Yeah, I've never had anything even remotely as scary as that
happen. I once unplugged my Christmas lights in my dorm and went to bed. A few
seconds later, they came back on, despite my having unplugged them. All of the
people staying in my room were still in their respective places of sleep. They freaked
the fel out. I went over, found it was still unplugged. Light went off when I reached
    for it.
That's the scariest, most unexplained thing I've ever experienced. Yours is leagues
    more terrifying though. =p

Those Christmas lights probably had charge capacitors in them, and the charge potential probably discharged into the lights when you unplugged it, allowing them to light up for a few seconds. By the time you went to investigate, the residual charge in the capacitors ran out, and they turned off.

    there, explained, ezpz :P

I've heard your story before gravemind, and somehow I don't think you're the originator of this story.

Better explanation than "These refurbished WWI era dorms are haunted." Thanks for
    that.
One of the girls refused to sleep in the room too, was quite funny. (She insisted it
was ghosts, as we had just had a horror move marathon. I will never understand why
girls seem to enjoy getting scared... but I digress.)

This story has a creepypasta now, so, that would explain it. I've also made a post about the other story (the one with my gf in Canada) a few months back.

That's some crazy shit man, I would've turned around and said fuck this shit. Glad I carry like your friend haha. Honestly I've never had something unexplained happen to me, probably due to me not going out to much as I work and come home to game it up lol.

Also for some weird reason creepy/unexplained events never seem to occur when reliable recording equipment is present.

P.S assuming the story is real... It very easily could have been a LARP event that you stumbled into. From the description of the events you never seemed to be in any serious danger, being in a running vehicle, yet your dumb "Marine" friend decided to just let two rounds of randomly for no apparent reason, acting incredibly irresponsible.

Anyways the story is bullshit, and also makes no sense.

First of all, nothing paranormal happened in this story, and secondly, I've never not been sober in my entire life.

The only times when I wish that I owned a gun are when I'm driving through the wilderness at night.

Well that's....yeah. That's a thing. I'm hit with the paranoia stick often enough as-is, that ain't gonna help with driving at night.

I think as far as the unexplainable goes, I don't really have any experiences like that. I can use a friend's story, but that's about it.

When my friend was about 7 years old, he was sitting in a room with the lights off, hallway door open with the light on, watching Ed, Edd, n' Eddy, and decided to play with the shadow coming from said hallway. He was waving his arm rapidly to make the shadow wave across the TV screen, and for a few seconds after he stopped, the shadow was still waving. Needless to say, he had the natural reaction, and got the hell out of that room, running straight to his mother.

At least, that's what he tells me. I dunno, at that age, I always saw shadowy hands out of the corners of my eyes while at the house we were living at at the time, no matter the time of day, but my dad attests that he heard voices outside his room whenever he would go to nap, go to check it out, and find no one there. I still believe there was something wrong with that house to this day. But again, being easily paranoid can make pretty much any situation seem more dangerous/mysterious then it really is, and because of it, I'm pretty terrified to look outside a window at night, or do pretty much anything, for that matter.
    I like Aigis. Sue me.

Could just be that crazy people are more likely to be bad with technology and/or more
likely to make something up and report it?

Crazy happens all the time. Often it ends in silencing some parties involved, or people
    shrugging it off.

I'm with you on the window at night thing. I don't mind so much if I'm in a moving vehicle,
but in a building? No way. I feel like I'll be the guy at the beginning of a horror flick who
    gets impaled through the window. ;_;

Haha you haven't even heard of the unmarked fake police car story yet... all of the fiends come out at night. Always be aware, trust no one, question everything, and have a plan.

As for your friend's story, it seems to mostly just be a psychosomatic thing.

I never said anything about paranormal. You used the descriptive unexplained, but anyways both paranormal or not what I said still applies.

It was dark in the house, no lights on in the bathroom and a giant clown face appeared out of no where on the shower curtains.

If there were no lights and it was dark...how do you know it was a clown face?
