Transgender teacher to return to California classroom as 'true self'

Parents of students at a California high school are reacting to news that a long-time male high school science teacher is going to return after spring break as a woman.

The teacher, Gary Sconce, informed the Yosemite School District that he will be back in the classroom April 22 as his "true self," a woman by the name of Karen Adell Scot, KFSN-TV reported Thursday.

What do you guys think about this? Would you have a problem with this guy/girl teaching your children and also having to explain why hes now a girl?

I'm pretty sure she's teaching the subject of science, not the subject of "why i'm a girl now."

As long as they keep it professional, I don't care.

    World evolves.. Times changed..
Nothing to see there, and the students will live.
What matters is the quality of the teaching, not the person.

When kids are introduced to ideas others may see as "peculiar", they don't notice and just get along with it. It could help reduce/remove stigma over time if things like this just happen and stop being "news worthy" events.

As long as the entire class doesn't become about how people shouldn't discriminate against the transgender (Which they shouldn't, but that's another thread), there isn't an issue.
Personally I would have a problem with my children being in that persons classroom.

I think more adults would be up in arms about this than the students, students usually couldn't care less about things like this, while the bigot parents are the ones who get up in arms about things like this.

Why? Do you think your children aren't mature enough to understand? Is it a religious thing, in which case your religious beliefs have no place in a public school? Or are you just ignorant and bigoted?

I'm sure many people would out of ignorance and the misguided belief that if they can somehow keep their children sheltered they will never ever learn about the "other" that exists.

And frankly I'm sure the kids will be far less reactive to the situation than the parents will.

You would have the problem, likelihood is that the kids wouldn't. Depending on the age of the kids, older ones will be twats about teachers behind their backs, but that's every teacher tbh.

    I'm shocked.

I'm just curious -- what do you think the harm to your child would be?

"Bigoted" doesn't really apply to a case of mental disorder.

While I totally agree with you, I think many students in high school have already formed opinions about certain things like this. I worry that after her transition, she could be walking into a very stressful situation with teenagers the way they can sometimes be. By no means am I suggesting that she hide who she is, I just imagine this takes a lot of courage, perhaps more than I would have in the situation.
