Totally expected, quicker expansion for $50, more money for them.
Nothing new really, they always have an expansion in the works, hell they had TBC being made while Vanilla was out, same with WOTLK when TBC was out.
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tom chilton did a interview on a nz gaming website.
Q: How far out do you plan content and think ahead?
Chilton: We are already in progress with our next expansion. We already have zones in production for it. Our next expansion after that, we have a couple of different options that we’ll be choosing between over the next several months. Beyond that, there are about six or seven different ideas for expansions that we can take elements of and say, ‘You know what? Let’s take that and put it in this one for our next expansion after the next one.’ Or we might shift the timelines around from what we originally envisioned. There’s easily 10 years worth of stuff that we can draw from – more, really.
I'm gonna let 'em know that Dolemite is back on the scene! I'm gonna let 'em know that Dolemite is my name, and fuckin' up motherfuckers is my game!
...the team will also be looking at the theme for the seventh expansion "over the next several months."
They can't be doing much more than some very basic zone work if they don't have a theme. And... how the hell are they working on future expansions if they don't have a story? That bodes ill for any coherent story across expansions.
Yes they have always been doing that. Work on a new expansion begins before the release of the current expansion.
They just upped the scale of that happening, since they now have bigger numbers of designers.
"And all those exclamation marks, you notice? Five?
A sure sign of someone who wears his underpants on his head."
They said that they started working on WoD zones around 5.1. WoD isn't even out yet and they are already making zones for the next expansion. They've had this expansion (7.0) planned since blizzcon, albeit most likely a few changes here and there). So they have had months to think about what they want to do and most likely have zones, themes, some raids, thought out already.

They reported they were working on MoP like 2 months after cata dropped. Not so far off.
Am I the only one worried that Activision is trying to get Blizz to pull a CoD (yearly installments)? I like the 2ish year cycle for expansions, allows me to get into the story and setting more.
If they didn't already have a team working on the -next- expansion, then it would be ages between expansions. And yes, I am regarding next as after WoD.
They said they were working on the next expansion when MoP went into beta....... here we are 3 years down the road and WoD isn't out and from the look of the beta is far from being as polished as it should be. These sort of statements from them is the same sort of bull shit as when they say they won't have such long end raid tiers and we get a year or in this case over a year of nothing new.
"Privilege is invisible to those who have it."
But were they really working on it during the beta or having concepts of WoD during it? They talked about in the WoW: Source for warlords of draenor that their ideas changed a lot from a mongrol horde to what they have now on draenor. They have most of the zones planning and ideas already thought out and now they are actually making the content and out of the planning phases.
