What was your "Moment" as an athlete?

For all of us sports junkies that were are possibly still are athletes, I have a question for you all. What was your signature moment as an athlete? Mainly I talk about a story that you had when you played a sport that you will carry as a memory for the rest of your life.

Mine was my senior year of football. I played our slot WR and also took care of the specialist responsibilities (ended up doing that in college following high school) My team was heading into the playoffs with two games to go (we regularly would win our conference every year and expected playoff runs). We were going up against a highly ranked team and were expected to lose. This game was important because it was the difference between a home playoff opener and having to go on the road.

When the game started, we ended up going down early and it looked like it was going to be a long night. We went into the fourth quarter down 21-6. The moment the third quarter started, we scored a touchdown, and ended up roaring back to tie the game at 28-28. We stopped them on third down and got the ball back with about 1 minute left. We were able to matriculate the ball down to the 28 yard line with 1.3 seconds left. Needless to say we line up for the game winner only to have their coach call a timeout. I was able to hit the game winner from 42 yards to cap a historic comeback by our school that helped us push into the playoffs on a roll. Needless to say, that night was the night of our lives, and one amazing weekend and week of school following; it's something I'll never forget and always love to reminisce about getting carried off of the field that night.

So now I ask, what was your iconic moment as an athlete? What is a moment that you will never forget about and always remember as being at your pinnacle? I look forward to the responses!

When I finished my first marathon.

Played college baseball (D3) -- was a pitcher. I threw a 169-pitch game (8 2/3 inning loss against the team that ended up coming second in the nation) on Senior Day the week before our conference tournament. The weekend of the conference tournament I went another 7 innings and 120-ish pitches to get the No Decision (came out of the game with the lead, then our bullpen blew it but our offense came back and saved the game). The very next day, in the championship game (it was double elimination and we lost from the winner's bracket forcing a final game) and we were low on pitchers so I told my couch "put me in" and on zero days rest I came in and pitched 2 innings and ended up getting the Win (thanks to some great hitting by our squad in the bottom half before coming out) ... it was the last outing of my college career. My arm has never felt all that great since (plus I missed my Junior year after having rotator cuff surgery)

We had lots of beers that night and sang Queen's WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS many many times.

When I was 16 I was in a mountain biking fall, going head over heels with a bike wrapped around my legs, completely dicking up my knee and ending my chances of going on to play meaningful hockey (AAA/Junior).

Was my first win in road cycling. It was blowing a gale. There was the two of us in the lead group. With 6miles to go I was spent and losing the wheel of the guy in front. then we turned corner and I was able to recover slightly. With 3 miles to go we turned another corner and now had a head wind. I looked around and not 100 yards away was the next group. I had a surge of adrenaline and attacked with 2 miles to go and soloed to my first win.

I don't think I've had it yet. I ran a 1:26 half marathon last month, which was good for 46 out of ~4000 people, so that's pretty good, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a lot faster still. I'm likely to win some local running events, so that'll be fun. For someone that's relatively new to the sport, I'm pretty fast and quite dedicated, so I'm confident of it going well.

I used to be a good local basketball player, but due to some unusual circumstances, couldn't play high school ball. I had some great pickup games, but no one's going to record that, you know?

I never really played sports besides baseball when I was a little kid(around 7 years old).

But I guess I did have a 'moment'. We were playing our last game and I was the catcher. But while a guy was attempting to swing at a throw, he did not just drop his bat but he like threw it at my head. I blacked out there for a second, but I had to continue to play or we would have to forfeit because we barely had any players. We lost the game, but at least we gave them a run for their money.

    -During 5th grade-
Dodgeball 50v50. We played within the lines of a basket ball court with 8 balls in play. Once someone is out, they go outside the black lines of the opponents area. So they can throw balls from all directions. I was last one alive against 4 alive, with balls being thrown again in all directions. Although four were stuck in my area but I couldn't get too it being that I was on some Dbz bullshit style of dodging.

Our gym had a rule of once someone is alone dodging, 30 consecutive dodges and you win by default. Again, like a champion my inner Goku came out and I was head dodging, ducking, dippin, jumping, barrel rolling, even did an unnecessary rotation on my left shoulder dodging two balls at once. After I won that game I went from that fat kid chosen last to first pick. awkward

This isn't to make fun of anyone or their moments, I just couldn't help but think of it.

There was this time, during 7th grade gym class. We were outside, playing some weird game that involved bases and beanbags. This guy and I were getting in an argument about who was faster, and throughout the game we kept trying to one up each other.

Eventually, after the class was almost over, the teacher rounded us up and started talking about stuff. The guy and I, of course, were still talking about who was faster. Teacher got angry and told us to settle it right now.

We raced in front of everyone, and I won.

    ...Yeah.

The single most significant sporting event in the history of mankind.

OT: I only really played organized sports when I was a kid up until 6th grade. On the first play after kickoff on the first game of the season, I reached past the center just as the ball was snapped and dragged the QB to the ground without having to get out of a 3 point stance. Sadly, because it was impossible to see I had done it, another player got credit.

Second place was as a freshman in high school, during gym I waved my arms backward while we were playing co-ed football and accidentally got my first feel of tit.

I stopped playing sports once I got to high school after realizing most of them were 12 hours of practice per week. Not to mention my school had a no cut policy.

But before that, I played 9 years of baseball and basketball, had a few good and ugly moments.

In both 4th and 5th grade, my baseball team played the final game of the season before the playoffs against a team that was 11-0. In both cases, we made miraculous comebacks and won. In the second game of the two, we were losing 7-5 going into bottom of the 6th (only played 6 innings). The guy before me lead off with a walk. The first pitch I saw I lined down the left field line. Unfortunately for them, the outfield fence wasn't quite complete by about 10 ft. out there, so it just kept rolling. I ended up getting an inside the park home run. Now tied 7-7, the pitcher got quite flustered and walked the next 4 batters.

That pitcher walked off the mound in tears. I could related to that, because the previous year something similar happened to me. I was only 10, and really didn't know what I was doing when it came to pitching other than throw strikes. The playoff format that year was a double elimination. We got off to a bad start by losing the first game. For the next 3 weeks, we fought our way through the loser's bracket until we reached the championship game against the team we lost to at the start of the playoffs. I then proceeded to give up 6 runs in one inning. I didn't even record an out because of the 6 run limit per inning mercy rule. Two errors by my teammates early on made me so mad that my pitches began to go behind the batters. It was ugly. Definitely a memory I wish I could get rid of. Needless to say, we lost that game, 7-1. We would've still had to play another game after had we won, but I certainly didn't help matters much.

I wasn't that great at basketball. Actually, I was awful, but being taller than everyone else made it look like I was decent. One year my team was 0-9 in the 10 game season rec league. I managed to hit a jumper at the buzzer for our lone victory that year. I was usually a calm, collected person who barely talked, so seeing me go nuts after doing that almost scared my teammates.

Being told that I was an anchor for the outdoor track team's 4x8 A team (and various other events).

I'd joined the track team (well, XC first) my freshman year and had never expected to be any good. Was just trying to branch out and help my social awkwardness. If you'd had told freshman-me, a tall, awkward kid with a 10:36 mile time, that I'd be a star runner for the XC, indoor, and outdoor track teams by my senior year... Well, I would've told you that you were crazy.

We won our local championship meet, though we unfortunately didn't quite make it through sectionals. Winning that championship remains one of the best moments of my running career, and I hope that I can keep it going strong once I begin to run longer marathons and ultramarathons and the like.

One day, spontaneously in the midst of a rigorous training exercise, I finished my third bag of Cheetos in as many hours. When I arose from my chair I felt strange. Dizzy. My chest pounded; my legs, sore and cramped as I lurched dutifully across the expansive studio apartment. When I finally arrived at the edge of the kitchen devoid of breath and energy, I saw that my tireless suffering had finally paid off. For there lay a fourth, unopened bag of Cheetos. I promptly returned to my seat and finished the dungeon amidst a flurry of artificial cheese powder and puffed cornmeal.
