I go to R20 and stop because I have no reason to go further. Yea, there's the golden hero portrait, but that I can get with time anyways. So, why not offer X amount of dust per rank you reach at the end of each month. That would give an alternative source of dust on a controlled schedule for people who don't want to throw hundreds of dollars to get cards to DE.

Not gold, because we have dailies for gold.
You get a card back the first time you hit legend. Once you get it once then there is little more then bragging rights other then the tourney coming up.

If you want to be rewarded for skill go play arena where everybody has an equal footing.
There is some skill in arena but I honestly think it really just comes down to your draft options and skill level of your opponents rather then your own personal skill.

The ladder has no rewards for reaching higher ranks whatsoever. It's either Legend rank or rank 20 for the card back. Anything else does not matter. This aggravates the high barrier of entry problem because a new player is immediately matched against tryhard decks that have no place in low ranks at all. Sometimes even golden portrait mech mages, face hunters, wallet warriors etc - all lingering at shitty low ranks because there isn't any incentive for those players to rank up.

Give some fucking gold for advancing to next rank. I don't know, like 50 gold per rank-up. It's not a lot, it's like 800 or so per month if you grind to Legend, but it's SOMETHING. These face hunters and cancer mages would have some incentive to get out of rank 20 club, even if they only end up at rank 8, 6 or so at the end of the season.
Everybody complains about coming against the big bad decks when starting out. Does it ever dawn on you guys that maybe you keep playing these decks because those that are using them are pretty bad themselves and can't even get out of your rankings WITH the cards?

The game has a horrendous barrier to entry.

Such a shame that this great little game has been ruined by economics.
Yeah, welcome to the world of collectable card games. They've existed for decades now, only difference is you play via a computer instead with physical cards. The game has always been designed around better cards having an advantage, and those better cards costing you money. At least with Hearthstone you can obtain cards without spending money.

When I first started playing MtG, people who had been playing longer shared their collections with me, threw piles of commons/uncommons/cheap rares my way that I could use or trade, or they let me borrow more expensive cards and just generally made the whole "starting off" process feel a lot smoother. Likewise, I did the same for other new players.

With Hearthstone you start off and...well, you get just the basic class sets and a little trash to go with them. And instead of playing other people who also have trash sets like you would when playing live in MtG, you're usually thrown in with people who already have copied the latest Trump deck or something.

And to make matters worse, even if you do buy packs there's a very small chance of getting a truly "rare" card. (Yeah, they call blues "rare" in Hearthstone but they're more analogous to "uncommons" in MtG)

It just "feels" crappy starting off. I'm not saying it's "Pay-to-win" or anything, but everytime I go to log in and look at my shitty collection, limited deck choices, and painfully slow or expensive options for progression, I just log back off. :O
Trading would be acceptable if there was no dust crafting in the game.

No trading keeps out any kind of rmt.

Personally I prefer the crafting over the ability to trade, however it would be nice to help out friends starting out in the game by tossing them a few cards.

It is the other way around.
Video game has the most "free" ones.

Most games get very popular because of fan made mods.
