What goes an Italian court for these days five pizzas and a bottle of wine ?
Before too many people go hurrdurring about double jeopardy: the trial was a farce because of how the evidence was handled and presented in court, not because of double jeopardy. US is not a magical paragon of justice descended from heavens and the Italian law system does in fact have double jeopardy. It "triggers" at a different point in time, which is nothing uncommon. Just the opposite, it's rather typical for continental law system. It also respects both ICCPR and ECHR (or well, more like the other way around). US' take on double jeopardy is *gasp* different because of different values.
Shame this hasn't happened in France though.
Generally speaking, double jeopardy works differently (or rather the moment where it triggers is different) in civil and common law countries. In civil law countries, the verdict is not considered to have legal force until one or more appeals has taken place. Basically, the verdict of the trial court is automatically stayed when a party appeals.
