China's not building it to hold up a big 'eff you' to the world -- they are building as a tactical precursor to taking control of the oil rich island chains in the area. That policy, incidentally, has some 'eff you' to the world, but that's not why they are doing it.

The US won't do any such thing because they wouldn't want to hold up an 'eff you' to China, and, unfortunately, those are the kinds of reasons why our administration does and does not do things, the optics and symbolism.

I was going to post something similar but you summed it up quite beautifully.

And before someone mentions that you can sink an aircraft carrier but not an island....I imagine a Seal team with some well placed demo charges could sink those 'islands' pretty effectively. They're nothing but dredged up sand and are probably one typhoon away from returning to the sea.

China is essentially saying "EFF you" to the world by knowing violating normal international water practices. They are fully aware of the precedent they are setting and how many are willing/capable of challenging them.

The US would do it to show the implications of letting countries just plot up fake island and claim sovereignty where they want,the US is against the practice in general though. It you be a "EFF you" to China and those who refuse to challenge China. The USA already ignores all Chinese request to not fly over or go near the islands.
