    Chips!

Do you make you own potato chips? I recently started making my own and they taste so much better than the nasty greasy ones you get in an air filled bag at the store. Its also cheaper to make your own and not very difficult. Just peel a couple potatoes, slice thin on a mandolin and fry in a pan with a few inches of oil or a deep fryer for a couple minutes and then salt and eat. I use sea salt as I think it tastes better and has a better texture

Sometimes my family makes a batch of plantain chips.

In my experience, it's a million times more effort with no real discernible benefit to cost, taste, or healthiness.

You can buy a 5 pound bag of potatoes for like 3 bucks (even cheaper at a farmers Market). A one pound bag of chips cost like $4 unless you buy nasty generic chips.

You're not taking potential costs into your equation.

Buying a 4 dollar pack of chips and opening it is infinitely less time consuming than making your own.

However, contrary to popular belief, time is not money, unless you're self-employed.

It's a good idea, I haven't thought of doing it. I make a lot of bulk food on the weekends to take to work for lunch anyways, so I could fry up some chips while I'm at it. What type of oil do you use? I'm sure you can use any and each gives a different taste.
And I saw, and behold, a pale horse: and he that sat upon him, his name was Death; and Hades followed with him. And there was given unto them authority over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with famine, and with death, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Yeah, but I could be doing something more productive, like arguing on a World of Warcraft off-topic forum, instead of making chips.

    That is a point.

I use sunflower oil, but I imagine many others could do. Olive oil has too strong a taste for chips imo, though.
Also, adding a garlic clove or two while they're frying make them delicious.

Before my diet I used to make chips.

We make chips all the time. Usually something like steak and chips, or fish and chips. Nom!

I actually use lard. It makes the best chips.

Meh i'm still not convinced. The big problem is that there is no easy/cheap way to store homemade chips for longer then a few days.

Maybe if somebody has a recipe for the most amazing taste ever that isn't sold regularly.

I have a couple of times, but it's just not worth the effort for me.

They keep just fine for at least a week in one of these:

They keep even longer if you have a foodsaver with the container that you vacuum the air out with
